for "someone" to stand and cheer for a cast member when the first enter on stage? and then quickly sit down? hahaa

Yes. Unless it's a high school spring musical and the football quarterback has the lead and the person standing up is the full back he has secretly been having sex with all year. And the full back is seated in THE BACK OF THE AUDITORIUM.
Other than that, it must never be done.

That makes me think...how many shows have you been to lately where a celebrated cast member's entrance is applauded? It's only natural to applaud Bernadette's entrance in GYPSY, and I know all three of the above-the-title stars (Kristin, Idina, and Joel Grey) get hands in WICKED for walking onstage - or in Kristin's case, flying...how big of a practice has this become? Is it a good thing, in everyone's mind?

I'm always surprised when it doesn't happen and it's a big name. And it happens far less often than it happens. Truth be told, I suspect there's a little goosing happening at the Gershwin... I think the entrance applause is started by people drawing a salary.

Hmm. I don't know about actually having paid applauders - I'm not sure it's necessary.
Of course, on Joel's entrance on Sat., I got to hear for one half-second the sound of my own hands clapping in an almost silent theatre - before the entire house joined.

I have a friend that used to be a plant in the audience to begin the curtain call applause for a Broadway legend which I can't mention because someone on this board will be mighty ticked off.
Namo, you know my football team so well.

I stood the moment TGC walked on stage at Singular Sensations the other night. I was in the third row and literally jumped out of my seat when I caught a glimpse of this goddess of the theater. Others followed suit. TGC saw me at that point and blew me a kiss.
I wouldn't stand and cheer for someone who had only one line in a production, though.
Gothampc, who, who was it for? I can think of several candidates often mentioned here. Come on please....

If Gothampc is referring to me, I wasn't, nor have I ever been a "plant", I start standing ovulations for TGC and Patti LuPone out of unmitigated love, not because I've been asked to do so.
What I find even more annoying is the rock concert "whooping" that takes place after big numbers or at curtain calls. Talk about obnoxious. And queenly to boot.
i don't see why standing and cheering would be wrong? dont you think the person your doing it for would appreciate it? Especially if it's Idina! Enjoy the show!

No Dollypop, I am not referring to you. My friend was paid by producers to sit in the audience and begin standing ovations. Nobody questions your true dedication to Ms. Channing.

How much did your friend get paid? Sounds like a fun job even I could do.
Though they couldn't pay me enough to clap for Norbert.
At The Producers, Nathan and Matthew will get roaring applause, I'm sure.

When I saw The Retreat From Moscow, the audience went wild the minute the painting lifted and they caught a glimpse of Lithgow. It was the second day of previews (Mat), so you could tell he wasn't used to it. Took him a second to get his first line out.

She got paid $100 per show in cash {cough tax-free cough}. But she had to "act" the part of an average theater patron and even after seeing the show for the gazillionth time, she had to act like it was her first time seeing it.
in concert, i'd say 'no, it's fine'; in a show, i'd say 'yes, definitely, it's wrong'. it breaks the line, interrupts the flow. to applaud a star entrance seems silly to me, but it happens all the time & the convention is already established. there are also well-known showstoppers, like 'mama's turn' & a # in 'boy from oz' which has mercifully escaped me, but it's the last song before 'i go to rio'. sorry 'bout no caps -- hurt wing.

Some polite applause when someone you like makes his/her first entrance is ok. As long as it doesn’t interfere with the performance. It gives him/her a boost to know they are acknowledged and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I like how the europeans do it. They yell Brava! At the end of shows.
BO Jon~ Love the "Brava" endings...much more savvy than the whoopin, cheering "we're a bunch o houligans" noises!
I been to a number of shows where "stars" are applauded on an entrance. A little admiration goes a long way. Closings are notoroius for an entire evening of cheers, tears and SO's. They're very special!
i thought Channing's well-known clacker was her former husband. Did she need to hire additional ones, or was your friend hired after the divorce?!?!
