I thought it was the most beloved and revered?
^^^That would be the film. The stage show is is a popular classic and a critical whipping boy. Hammerstein didn't write the book, as he did for the more highly regarded R&H shows.

Zosia Mamet's grandfather wrote the book.

What is scary to contemplate is that SOM was originally intended to be a straight play about the Von Trapps.
R&H were asked by their friend Mary Martin to write a couple of songs for the family to sing (since they were entertainers in real life). The men ended up writing an entire score.
Let's all take a moment to shudder at the thought of SOM without the music!
