Can anyone tell me if this is worth seeing.?
I loved it! I can't wait to see it a second time.
If you liked Dessa Rose and Caroline or Change you will like this. Felicia Fields blew me away.

The Color Purple was definitely a warm, moving show. I loved it, thought everyone was right on the mark. I saw it last week, and thought that maybe 5 minutes needing fine tuning, but I can heartily recommend it. I enjoyed the film, then read and enjoyed the book, and thought the musical stayed extremely close to the plot. There is a discount out there, though I paid full price...I still loved it!
I saw it on Friday. It was a pleasent surprise.

I'm sorry to say that I did not care for the show. I thought there was an abundance of talent on the stage, which, unfortunately, was wasted on severely weak material. I think what the main problem with the book and score was that it lacked specificity. In my opinion, none of the music had any range or contour. The book tended to focus on light-hearted sexual banter, rather than really digging into the journey of a woman who had to overcome many obstacles to survive and grow. The stakes simply weren't high enough. I guess that sums it up.
I would definitely recommend another show to spend your money on.
The book is problematic, but the music is great and the performances are beyond superb. LaChanze, Elisabeth Withers-Mendes, and Felicia Fields are astonishing. Ms. Wither-Mendes gives one of the most layered and nuanced performances I've seen in years.
The whole is greater than the sum of its part.
