The amazing box office of great comet got me thinking.

I believe that every celebrity is popular for a reason even if other people don't see the appeal. The biggest reality stars tend to have entertaining personalities that draw fans to them for example.

Now not every star of Josh Grobans level has proved to be as great a draws on stage, why is that? Why do you think that some people are able to translate success from one project to further success and others can't?

I would say they are basically the same. I think it is more about producers sometimes misapprehending the popularity/star quality of a given performer at a point in time.

^ So if a movie stars last hit was several years ago then their present day drawing power can't be assumed to be the same as it was then?

I don't think that p o p u l a r i t y and star quality are the same thing.  A performer can be popular, but is lacking in that special talent...that special appeal that is present in a professional.  Severus...you are a newbie!  Welcome to our humble theatrehood.  It's a little mellower than in years past, but one must be prepared to deal with some dodgy people.  Most persons in here are cool.

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

popularity is more of a tangible thing, whereas star quality is a kind of intangible essence. as for Josh Groban, the guy has a fantastic voice.

"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."

See I don't think that someone can get popular without that " x-factor". But maybe different art forms are a better fit for some people to bring out their unique set of  talents. Like maybe Leona Lewis should stick to pop music or if she really loves theater, a different character than a glamorous old  cat .

Gypsy hit the nail on the head. Popularity is rather quantifiable (see IMDB rankings); star quality is immeasurable and subjective.

[ignoring at least one typo]

it cannot be assumed, but could be influenced by many other things. And sometimes a hit movie doesn't translate into drawing power. As I am fond of saying there are no rules but you do have to shake your head at some producers and their sense of what might draw. And of course a great show will lift even a flagging star.
