Thanks for the Info Alter...Are they doing a limited run or an open season?

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

So glad they picked the Maj, instead of the barn that is the Regent.

I saw WICKED at the Regent and I really liked the theatre.

I don't think it is a strictly limited run (POPPINS). I too am glad that it is going to the Maj, the best theatre in Melbourne for any musical.

The Regent was built as a cinema and it still is. The relationship between what is going on on stage and the audience isn't good. The only way I can describe it (or how I see it) is that I seem to be looking over a moat (orchestra pit) to see what is going on on stage. You feel removed from it all, whereas at Her Majesty's you feel involved, it is there in your lap. Does that makes sense?

KryptKid, have you been to Her Majesty's, or the Comedy?

The First ten or so rows of the Regent are good, everything else way too far away.

Alter from reading what has been in the press, it would seem to be a year run at least ( thats what they are hoping for )

And the Maj is the best theatre in the country for Musicals

Edit I should add that the Comedy is up there as well..

re: It's MARY POPPINS.

12 months may be pushing it. I'd say 6-9 months and then move up to Sydney to replace Wicked at Capital maybe.

I love the show. Saw first run in bristol before West End and then a few times on West End.

Look forward to seeing who they unearth to play Mary/ Laura Michell Kelly was great in the UK and Gavin lee a great Bert. Who can play it here? It will eb the support roles that will probably have the established Aussie theatre names. Judi Connelli immediately springs to mind as the evil nanny who oepns second act.

This totally made my day.

I think that this show actually has a bigger ready-made audience than Wicked, and therefore could easily run more than a year.

The movie is very loved and with both Disney and Cameron Mackintosh attached, expect a huge marketing campaign.

Casting ideas? Maybe Adam Fiorentino will come back to Oz and reprise Bert (the role he currently plays in New York). Either Marina Prior or Lisa McCune would be perfect for Mrs Banks, Rodney Dobson could be Mr Banks and probably a semi-unknown as Mary.

AlterEgo:

I've been to the Princess and the Regent in Melbourne. I had no problem at all in the Regent for WICKED. It was a great experience. I've seen it on Broadway, I've seen many shows on Broadway and I've seen many shows and operas in Sydney. I'm a happy camper. :)

Rosscoe I couldn't agree more about needing to be in the first 10 rows at the Regent, and yes I too love seeing a musical at the Comedy - especially if there is a decent sized orchestra in the pit. (NINE sounded fabulous there).

According to the press they aren't neccessarily looking for a name for Mary so I doubt whether they'd go to the expense of a Lisa Mc Cune for a supporting role.

KryptKid, I wasn't being rude when I asked whether you'd been to Her Majesty's, it was just an enquiry. When you come down and see MARY POPPINS at the Maj you'll understand what Rosscoe and I mean when we say that HMT is the best theatre in Australia for musicals.

re: It's MARY POPPINS.

Lisa'a name is being thrown around quite alot for Mary, so was the young girl who was in My Fair lady last year ( off the top of my head her name escapes me )

The wierd thing is Cam Mac keeps on saying in every press interview we don't need a name to be Mary, but than Lisa's name comes up.

I am not really sure if she would be my first choice, for some reason I see Chloe Dallimore.

re: It's MARY POPPINS.

If one looks at how Cam Mac and Disney casted the original London and New York productions, one would see that Mary was always played by an up and coming young actress (Laura Michelle Kelly and Ashley Brown), while Mrs Banks was played by an established older star (Linzi Hateley and Rebecca Luker).

Lisa McCune is too old to play Mary, but since her name keeps appearing attached with the production, I assume she is up for the role of Mrs Banks.

The role of Mary calls for a lyric soprano - Chloe Dallimore doesn't seem it fit for me. Neither does Taryn Fiebig, who played Eliza in Opera Australia's My Fair Lady.

There is one name that keeps popping into my head though - Octavia Barron Martin. She was Hodel in the Topol Fiddler revival, and was most recently in Little Women. She has a beautiful lyric soprano, and is the right age and has the look to play the role.

AlterEgo, I didn't think for a minute you were being rude. I just wanted to let you know I've been to many theatres and I've never felt any of them were inadequate. However, as several of you here have spoken well of the Her Majesty's, then I will take your word that it is the best theatre in the country for musicals, and I look forward to seeing a show there.

re: It's MARY POPPINS.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Mary is cast through a reality television show. All this "Mary doesn't need to be an established star" talk from Cameron Mac Intosh can't help but make me wonder if this is the first hint at such a programme. If a television networks name appears amongst the presenting partners soon you can pretty much be assured that this will be the case.
