I can see Stephen Lynch as Judas, but Jesus...that's another thing entirely. I think he's got entirely too much going for him to be playing what is essentially a background role in the show.
sally1112, you're not alone in finding the Neeley production to be a little lacking in the production department, but what do you expect from a Troika tour? IIRC, their maximum budget for a show is $250,000, maybe a little more, maybe a little less, and by whatever means necessary, they always seem to deliver that.
As for those of you who seem to think that all Ted Neeley can do successfully is cash in on his movie role, shame on you! This man is well-respected, and he's been performing the role for close to 40 years. Is he too old for it? Maybe, but you don't see people who give much of a **** when Topol comes out on stage wiggling his ass singing "Tradition." Sure, they'll complain, but never a hue and cry that he's horrible in the part. What do you lot have against Ted Neeley? All I see is someone who can still perform some impressive high notes in the score successfully without vocal training. If that and his age are all you've got, I'm truly ashamed of you people. Apparently suspension of disbelief has never occurred to anybody before. (eyeroll) Steve Balsamo and Eric Kunze are fine, but there's only one Ted Neeley. And comments that 90% of the people in the original JCS movie cannot sing just show the ignorance of those making them, kthnx.
The Sebastian Bach/Eric Kunze (at one point)/Carl Anderson revival was the same revival with Jerome Pradon on DVD that was in the UK (the original West End production in '96 was different), and was brought to the U.S. It failed for various reasons, not the least of which (IMO) was casting Bach, who I found truly terrible. Kunze was much better, I'll say that for him. And Anderson...well, for me, no one can truly replace Carl as Judas.
As for the remake, I'm with SporkGoddess. I see the idea as pointless. But to go into why at this point would be me flogging a dead horse, as I'm sure one can find several reasons why I'd find the idea pointless earlier in my post. And so, take the floor!

I only saw the DVD of the revival, and have the brochure and CD (and saw the set model) from the London Revival which was different, I much prefered the look of the London version, It was more "classical" almost period set, whereas the NYC revival was more "modern" and I can't stand the voices of almost everyone on the DVD. Renne Castle was fine as Mary, but I did see her in Toronto as Nala in Lion King and she just couldnt manage "Shadowland". Pilate (My Fav. Role) while played by a total beefcake, totally over-acts and does not do a very good job at all.
So far My Fav. Jesus and Fav. rendition of Gesthemane is the one by Drew Sarich on the German (sung in Engligh) CD, It has an EMO twist to it.

I love Eric Kunze's interpretation of "Gethsemane" and would be thrilled to see him back on Broadway.
Eric is performing the role beginning this coming week at Civic Light Opera of South Bay Cities in Redondo Beach, CA. More information at the fansite: www.erickunze.com
