Hi- I need answers to a couple of questions about Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I hope you can help:

1. Which brothers sing solos in the show?

2. Can the prisoners who are in jail with Joseph be doubled by any of the brothers?

Thanks.

I don't know the exact names of the brothers, except Judah who sing benjamin calypso, and Reuben I think, sings those canaan days. also, one more angel in heaven is sung by a brother.
as for your other question, yes the prisoners can be doubled, because that scene goes directly into go, go Joseph which ends the first act, and the brothers are not in the show from close every door till the end of the act.

Reuben was the eldest of the children of Israel
With Simeon and Levi the next in line
Naphtali and Isaachar with Asher and Dan
Zebulun and Gad took the total to nine
Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Benjamin and Judah, which leaves only one
Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Joseph - Jacob's favourite son

I don't need to know exactly which brothers sing solos...I need to know how many different guys are needed to sing the solos...their character names are not important at this point.

Well then, just listening to any of the recordijngs will tell you:

1 solo on "One Moe Angel", 1 on "Those Caananb Days", and 1 on "Benjamin Calypso.

Traditionally, the Baker, the Butler and all the other Egyptians are doubled by the brothers. In some productions, Jacob and Potiphar are played by the same actor. Pharoah doubles as the Ishmaelite who buys Joseph.

So you need a total of 14 men:
Joseph
11 brothers
Jacob/Potiphar
Pharoah

And as many women as you want:
Narrator
Female chorus (including Potiphar's wife)

We did it at my school this year. I was Reuben and the Butler, and i sang canaan days and one more angel in heaven. Judah sang Benjamin Calypso and played the Baker. Napthali played the Pharoh. He had one hell of a costume change between his scene and Canaan Days, but he made it every time. The brothers also doubled as the guards. It's a show that works well very easily.
