Posted: 6/1/05 at 8:31amShe was amazing! though she was using a dumb accent (like everyone else), she was incredibly sexy and was actually the emotional heart of the piece. She enters for Vatican wrapped in a sheet lowered from the ceiling and then proceeds to do the most sexual staging I've ever witnessed and then is raised upside down back to teh rafters to THUNDEROUS applause. Her second act solo "Simple" sits a little high for her but her character is so destroyed by then, it didn't matter. She was also a favorite of the theatre community and totally deserving of her Tony and accolades.

Posted: 6/1/05 at 8:42amWasn't "A Call from the Vatican" transposed down a step or two for Jane? Anyway, I thought it was a great entrance and a greater exit for the number and Jane was sexy, as always... but the late Anita Morris blew the place apart with her delivery. I missed some of the comedy that Morris brought to the role, and that number in particular.

Gawd, I kick myself for missing this show.
I let my hatred of Antonio Banderas blind me....
Ow! just kicked myself again!

I saw the show and I must agree - the standout in my eyes was definitely Mary Stuart Masterson. She was phenomenal.
Jane was very good, especially in "Vatican", but I didn't really like her second song - as a matter a fact, I don't like it on the recording either - and I didn't think she was exceptional enough for a Tony... not when even in the same show there were better performances than hers.

Posted: 6/1/05 at 10:23amI thought hers was the least deserving performance. I absolutely think that her entrance and that she is so well loved in the theatre helped a great deal in her winning. I thought several actresses were superior to her in Nine, particularly Mary Stuart Masterson who was amazing. Her focus was unflinching, while I felt that Jane's focus was on her numbers and that is it. The cast stays onstage for most of the show, and she seemed bored. Her accent was on/off again. I did love what they did w/ call from the Vatican, but she owes alot to the director/choreog. and stagehands for that tony win. Cone to think of it, I didnt like her in Grand Hotel either...Adelaide...seems like a very good role for her.

Chip,
Are you sure you're not talking about Bernadette's performance?
Ugh.

Posted: 6/1/05 at 12:25pmI went into this show thinking that I'd be napping in between the times Chita was onstage. I was wrong. I loved this show.

Saw the original once and the revival twice.
Wish I had seen each many more times.
