Ok- the world did not come to an end with the broadcast of the show on BBC2 last night- contrary to the protestations of a small fundamentalist lobby, which seemed to think it could dictate the viewing choices of the nation.
I don't know if a DVD will be released but the broadcast was very well-made- a multi-angle live recording, directed with clarity so that we see the overall stage picture and plenty of close-ups. I'm not a fan of the show myself, but the cast is certainly impressive vocally. David Soul is solid if not a revelation as Jerry and Alison Jiear shows herself to be the mega-star those of us who caught her in Eating Raoul, Hot Mikado and Cell Block H have known her to be for a long time.
I don't think the TV broadcast will provoke a revival in the London box office- if anything it is likely to put off those people who like a bit of Jerry, but who don't like operatic music.
There was an interesting documentary before the show, charting the development of the show, (which I first caught in Edinburgh)and all the fuss of recent days.
I look forward to following the show's reception if it does cross the Atlantic!
