I'm not a huge opera person...I enjoy it but don't know a lot. Does the show draw a lot from traditional operatic pieces? Are there songs that make a die-hard opera enthusiast go, "Hey, that sounds a lot like..." or "This song must have been inspired by..."?

It makes a lot of allusions to opera, but only passingly. What it does so is mix well-crafted music with irreverent but not pretentious vulgarity.

You have to see/hear it.

actually, imho it's extremely operatic.

frequent tips of the musical hat to bach and even handel ... vocal ranges that SOAR ... and almost entirely sung throughout.

dip me in chocolate and throw me to the lesbians if that aint opera ... re: Jerry Springer: The Opera - Musical Origins?
