******* spoiler ?? ********

In the last scene -- what does Rooster dig up with the hammer? It looks like something wrapped in a bloody rag, but I was in the front row this week and I still couldn't figure out what it was

Sorry, it's just been bugging me

Due to the scene following it I believe it was someone in his families ashes

I have a script from the London version (before any NYC changes, and there are some differences)

It says that he burns the Eviction Notice in a can, and is scattering THOSE ashes as he walks in a circle

So you're probably right -- it's still ashes, but some he dug up

Thanks for responding Jerusalem question

"MAGIC STUFF"

I guess that's the official answer -- I asked Mark Rylance

When he said that, I asked "like bones and amulets?" (cuz I thought I saw a piece of bone fall out that day), and he just smiled and said "Magic stuff"

I just thought I'd post it, since no one else seemed to be sure either

When he first held it up, I thought it was a heart, and was slightly relieved to see that it was a bloody handkerchief. I'm glad you posted this, though, because I had been wondering what fell out of the hanky when it opened.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

Magic stuff, haha. Yeah, I couldn't figure it out either but after reading the script I figured it was the ashes of someone in his family (I was in the mezz). There is a lot in that play that confuses me. I'm glad I'm seeing it again this weekend.

And that's all part of Jerusalem's magic stuff: it doesn't give easy answers and it often doesn't give answers at all.

It's a play that teases you with questions and suppositions and scenarios that are limited only by your own mind.
