I like most of his work.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Evita
Song and Dance
The Phantom of the Opera
Aspects of Love
Sunset Boulevard (OK, I haven't heard the whole thing, but I like what I've heard of it.)
The Beautiful Game
The Woman in White
I've heard a little of JCS, and I don't like it that much, other than "I Don't Know How to Love Him." All of his other work I can do without.

I agree about JCS althought I do like some others (Evita, Aspects of Love, Sunset Blvd). Perhaps it was his best because he was young and eager and full of an energy to proove himself and then maybe with all of his success, he got a little lazy...I don't know. Or perhaps he tried too hard to create "art" instead of just creating good musical theatre. He has always seemed a little full of himself for me.
Eh... not really. ^_^
I actually find Sunset Blvd. to be his greatest theatrical score. It musicalizes the drama and dialogue perfectly, and completely captures the feel of early 50's Hollywood -- regardless of whether or not the original movie ever existed. The score stand on its own.
JCS is my second favorite, but only because I'm not yet completely convinced that it works as a THEATRE piece. I've yet to see a live production that had as much emotional impact on me as simply listening to the score.
Oh, and The Beautiful Game is painful. Just painful.
No one yet has given Tim Rice his due.
EVITA and JCS may be ALW's greatest shows (and I only agree that EVITA belongs in that statement), but the whole "spectacle over substance" thing started when Tim and Sir Andy went their seperate ways.
Sir Andy had great financial success with his "fluff" shows, and Timmy toiled on such crap (sarcasm alert) as CHESS and BLONDEL, before succumbing to Disney and trading his talent for filthy lucre.
