"never said he was the actually u/s as there clearly isn't one. but he stated himself he could go on if needed."
You're really wedded to this idea but if you're talking about the video interview with McGill that was posted here, he never even hints at that. At all.

"They did cancel a couple of shows, but Michael C. Hall went back into the show for, I believe, a week or two."
Correct, but not as an understudy -- if they had one they would not have had to cancel at all.

^ Yes, and I imagine if they couldn't have pulled someone of Hall's stature into the show for that week, they probably would have gone dark instead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-_rNcFakEg Here is Paul McGill in the Logo segment of "Chorus Boys". Gosh, he's matured quite a bit physically since seeing him in "A Chorus Line."

1. AEA rules dictate that massive stars do not have to have an understudy, but the union has to agree on that with the individual production. "Hedwig" is a star vehicle and in line with a one man show. If Hedwig is out, the show is cancelled.
2. As was stated, when Mitchell injured himself, shows were cancelled, but one of their other stars was available to fill in. That is why the show went on.
3. McGill never once anywhere hunts that he would or could ever go on... Merely that he acts as Hedwig for rehearsals.
3. If a Hedwig WERE ever out in this production, billed as essentially a star one man show, the audience would legally be entitled to a refund.
4. In the case of Radcliffe in How to Succeed, they had an understudy for EXTREME emergencies.. Similar to Hugh Jackman in Boy From Oz. If either were ill before show time or fell ill durig at one, the show would be cancelled. They were in place merely because the star was one piece among many and if the star fell ill duri act two, the show could be finished.

Will they announce early enough in the day when he's going to go on?
