Yesterday I had the pleasure to see Journey's End at the Belasco Theater. Words can't describe what I saw yesterday - I can only label it as an experience.
This was my first exposure to the show and I loved every moment of it. Before I can start talking about the cast and the play itself, the set must be mentioned. This was the best set I've ever seen for a play on Broadway. It was intimate, not more than fifteen feet high and extremely detailed. The lighting was dim, mostly using candles located onstage. I was sitting in the second row center and truly felt like I was in the trenches with these men.
Speaking of the men - this is the best assembled cast I've seen all year. Each actor simply IS his role, they were clearly very concentrared and the performances were very nuanced.
Boyd Gaines was WONDERFUL - I see another Tony in his future. Also, Hugh Dancy will definately get a nominated for his breathtaking performance as Stanhope.
Another standout was Stark Sands as Raleigh - he wasn't so innocent and his anxiety was so present from the beginning and it was a performance I'll remember for years.
The writing itself was phenomenal and while the house was sold out, everyone was hanging on to every single word. Every sound had a reaction and something so simple as seeing the empty cabin brought the crowd to tears.
This was definately the best production, play or musical, that I've seen this season. I'd strongly suggest you go out and see it for yourself - it's an EXPERIENCE.
Glad you liked it. I saw it last night and loved it.

I agree completely. I've seen it twice, and it is the most powerful piece of theatre I've seen on stage.
I will say the closer you can get to the stage the more powerful this show is, but it is great from any part of the house (except the balcony I hear).
