Judith Light is amazing. I wish I had seen her play Joanne in COMPANY.

Judith Light is the BEST! As far as I'm concerned, she can play anyone!

"Judith Light is amazing. I wish I had seen her play Joanne in COMPANY."

I saw that production and although her singing was fine, she wasn't particularly memorable. To me, she seemed to be "playing" Joanne rather than "being" Joanne.

At the time, I only knew her from WHO'S THE BOSS and thought she was just another TV star they'd employed without making sure she had the chops for the role.

Since then I've seen her in UGLY BETTY, SAVED and other TV and film roles, and have come to appreciate just how good she is. So I don't know why she didn't stand out more in COMPANY.

I was fortunate to see Judith Light's very first performance in WIT. I was amazed by the depth of her work the first time she performed the difficult play.

She was also wonderful playing determined mom Jeanne White in the television film "The Ryan White Story" in 1989.

I never watched "Who's the Boss," but I think she was on soaps prior to that, and had done New York theater as well.

I'm sorry, I meant the film SAVE ME above, not SAVED!

SAVE ME is an independent drama about a home for "recovering" gays headed by Judith LIght. She takes a role that could have easily been a caricature and makes it quite moving.

COMPANY is a complicated show and the rehearsal periods for Reprise! productions are short. Maybe Light could work wonders with Joanne if she had more time. As I said, it's not that she couldn't sing it or stunk up the place, she just seemed miscast. Yet I've seen her do similar roles since and she seemed perfect for the parts.

I've been thinking lately that Patricia Clarkson should play Amanda... can someone make that happen?

BTW, I was only reporting what I saw in COMPANY.

I think the idea of Light as Amanda is brilliant! (And I saw Jessica Tandy's revival on Broadway, so I don't take casting of that role lightly.)

By the way gaveston how did that play? I can only imagine how great tandy was, i mean shes perfect for the role but was her age a major issue? How did the scenes work with an older amanda and clan?

Honestly, I loved Jessica Tandy and thought her one of our greatest actresses. I'd also worked with her in stock and liked her personally. And to top it all off, she was the spitting image of my beloved grandmother. So I'm probably not objective.

Yes, in theory Tandy was past the ideal age for Amanda. But she was by no means frail and she managed to rein in the flirtation scenes just enough that Amanda seemed sympathetic rather than ridiculous.

I thoroughly enjoyed her. Oddly, some of the scenes that remain clearest in my mind are the monologues where Amanda is on the telephone trying to sell magazine subscriptions to people she knows. Absolutely heartbreaking in that the activity was so at odds with Amanda's desired persona, yet oddly inspiring in that those scenes showed her to be a survivor.

Tandy's interpretation definitely put the steel in "steel magnolia".

Light did such fantastic work there. The stuff in the courtroom was phenomenal.

When JUDITH LIGHT replaced KATHLEEN CHALFANT in the original production of W;T at the Union Square Theatre, many rolled their eyes thinking 'Why would you replace a gifted New York actress in an acclaimed performance with a TV sitcom star???!!!' Certainly Judith had big shoes to fill, but rose spectacularly to the challenege and made the role of Vivien Bearing her own. It was a phenomenal performance and it was Judith who took the show on tour, filling much larger venues like the Wilbur Theatre in Boston. Everyone who saw her was blown away by Judith Light.

She came back to Broadway last year not playing, but becoming Marie Lombardi in LOMBARDI at Circle-in-the-Square and rightly was nominated for a Tony, only to lose out to Ellen Barkin in THE NORMAL HEART. And who but Judith could take on the Linda Lavin role in OTHER DESERT CITIES when the play transferred to Broadway?

Last week on THE VIEW, Judith talked about how she looked down upon soap operas and situation comedies when she first started, devoting herself to theatre repertory, but discovered how both genres used her considerable stage craft. And now she's back on the 'Great White Way' where she nightly captivates audiences. She's also a familiar presence at Opening Nights and without pretension, always seems to pop up at box offices to buy tickets for family and friends, ingratiating herself to all who are fortunate to have this wonderful lady in their presence.

Judith Light is truly a shining light on the Broadway stage and let's hope they continue to find great roles for this lady who seems to do no wrong.
