Hi, I saw Phantom a few weeks ago for my first time and while looking in the playbill I saw Julie Hansons name, (she plays christine) and I noticed that she had no broadway experience and the only national tour she did was phantom. Then when I went to her web site it said that she tried out for the national tour of les miz like 8 times and never got it. Although she was wonderful,I thought to qualify for a broadway show you have to have an equity card. Before the phantom national tour she just had a bunch of regional theatre stuff. Can someone please explain this to me. Thanks
I believe the regional stuff helped her qualify to get her equity membership.
I saw her in Phantom and at Bryant Park - she has a lovely voice.

It is possible to get cast in a Broadway show as a non-equity performer and then that qualifies you to join. I believe this happened with some of the Hairspray cast members, i.e. Shannon Durig, Alli Mauzey.

Anyone can be offered a job in a Broadway show, regardless of whether or not they are an equity member. If they accept a job in an equity show and do not already have their equity card, then they have to join the union at that time. It is harder for someone who doesn't have their equity card to get seen (and hired) for a broadway show, but not impossible.
