July Discounts

I'll be making another trip to New York over the 4th of July weekend. When do those Broadway discounts usually start appearing? I also read that a lot of shows offer major discounts that week (like last year), should I hold off on buying tickets?

Are there any theatre-type events that occur during this time period that I must see?

I'm not sure how to answer your question specifically. We are planning a trip this May, and discounts for the shows we wanted to see started showing up at the end of February. If that is average, then you should probably start seeing discounts in April, depending on the show.
