MM; I wouldn't say "mediocre", there just wasn't any consistent tone running throughout that meant you left the theatre with one specific tune in your head.
And sabrelady.. I certainly didn't find Avenue Q mediocre either! The songs were great, it was very enjoyable.
Belting a high F isn't impressive if it's tense.
How can you compare Idina belting a high F to Kristin belting a C or lower??? There is such a big difference between the range they have to belt in, you just can't say one is a better belter than the other until you've heard them both belt the same thing.
If Kristin sang Defying Gravity, then I would be fine with your judgements. But nowhere in the show does she ever have to belt that high, so we'll never know.
That's because Kristin is smart. NO ONE should be belting a high F, ever! It's dangerous, and it doesn't sound good. If Idina would let it float into a head voice, it would be even more amazing.
i disagree, she's said for a fact that she's gotten training to safely develop her belt, if she can do it safely, then go for it. that section of defying gravity would not be the same without that energy and power she brings with her amazing belt. as for the comparison between the two there isn't a comparison. they're both very different, kristen being operatic and brassy, while idina is very rock ballad but can be mellow and sweet. i don't think you can compare them much as to who is better, but just my thoughts

Yeah, cause you know Idina wrote Defying Gravity. It's all her fault.
I agree with aspriringguy. She has had very careful training with belting and she wouldn't still be doing it after 6 months if she wasn't doing it correctly. I also agree that you just can't compare Idina and Kristin's singing...they are both very talented and very different.

Hi Jake,
I don't think you can make any TONY predictions based on just seeing a couple of the shows out there... how do you know you have not missed better more worthy performances elsewhere?

I saw four shows that will be up for Tony nominations. I may not have seen Assassins, Bombay Dreams, Taboo or Wonderful Town, but these are the four main contenders - in particular in the actress catergory. You don't have to see every show to be able to draw Tony opinions.
As much as I enjoyed Wicked, I think Avenue Q is a much better show, funny as hell, poignant, just amazing. I hope it wins the Tony!

Indeed why should you know all the facts to have an opinion. Good for you for making your mind up on who should win out of dozens of performances based on seeing two or three that are eligible. Why should you see each performance that may be nominated when you can base who should win on viewing two or three shows?
Nodules take years to develop, and yes she's been on Broadway for 10 years, but even that doesn't mean anything. There's a genetic component, they could still catch up with her, and where will that leave her. If you can see veins, it's not healthy. Check with any member of NATS.
Totally agree with you about Norbert.
Deleted this message cause I'm tired of arguing...
Just make sure to remind us every day about how Kristin's singing technique is so superior to Idina's okay? Gee whiz I might forget!

It virtually impossible to see every Tony nominated play or musical, especially in the case of the Olivier awards, but you can still make accurate guesses. I'll tell you what, Lee - if Kristin Chenoweth and Tonya Pinkins don't get nominated for Tonys, I will give you £5.
