Saw opening nights of King Stag and Fiorello this week. Here are some thoughts...
King Stag at Seattle Rep was interesting, and sometimes funny, but overall was very uneven and just okay. It's an adaptation of an older play (or story, it wasn't quite clear and I was too lazy to read about it), and it was trying to do what Bill Irwin did better with his adaptation of Scapin. (granted, his adaptation was an adaptation by the same people that adapted King Stag, but he still improved upon it) But Sarah Rudinoff was VERY funny as was R Hamilton Wright. Overall it was worth my free ticket, and I would probably pay up to maybe $20. But as a show, it's like a 3 out of 5.
Fiorello. After seeing Showtunes! concert mounting, I can see why it's never done. It's BORING. The book scenes are about 10 minutes long and there are maybe 10 songs in the whole show. There aren't any production numbers, there aren't any jokes, which is fine. But there isn't much drama, I don't feel connected to the characters, there's no reason for me to want to keep watching except for the performers. All the actors were great (especially David Silverman as the title character and Angie Louise), but the show itself is just boring. For musical theatre history goes, though, I was very happy I got to see a great concert mounting of it. I just hope that Showtunes will be able to stay afloat with doing three notoriously non-produced shows with no money-maker. We shall see. (2 out of 5 stars)
