I just saw Hairspray this past week and I was amazed with Kerry Butler who played Penny Pingleton. She is VERY talented and funny to boot. I was just wondering if anyone knows how old she is? I can't seem to find it anywhere, she looked pretty young.

She is in her mid twenties. She won't reveal her trye age in interviews.

Once a agin I say, Kerry Butler is the underappreciated secret weapon of Hairspray. Updated On: 6/7/03 at 09:36 AM

Who are the understudies for Kerry? Has anyone seen them, and are they good? I'm sure they cant touch her. Has she even missed a performance?

Kerry has never 'missed' due to illness. The only days she has missed were scheduled vacation days.

her understudies are Hollie Howard, Brooke Tansley. I BELIEVE Alli Mauzey will be made a Penny understudy -- she took over for Jenn Gambatese who was a Penny cover, but when she left, they made Brooke a cover.

I have Seen both Hollie and Brooke perform the role and I think Brooke Tansley comes in a close 2nd to Kerry but KERRY IS KERRY!!
I personally adore Hollie Howard because she is such a talented dancer and looks great on stage in any show but I didn't really care for her penny. I think she'd make a much better Amber and Im still waiting for her to get to go on! Brooke is adorable in the part as well. Kerry was only out on her vacation date but also did miss one wednesday mat due to illness but came back that night. She's really a trooper!

Kerry was great in Hairspray. I can't understand why she was overlooked as a nominee for a Tony. (?)

Ya I havent seen her perform live, but i did see the morning show clip of "Without Love" and she is vocally amazing. I love to hear her songs in hairspray because she belts like a white black girl!!

I just went out and bought batboy, which is ok, she sings alot, but it doesn't show off her belt range nearly as much as harispary. I want to buy the new cd, Prodigal?? Has anyone sen the play or heard it?? WHat kind of singing does kerry do? soprano, soft, belt, rock, ...??

thanks crazyatestevos, but for some reason my comp isnt playing the songs...re: re: prodigal...

anyhow, crazy8 i bought batboy last night, its a fun listen, though when i said kerry and her vocal ability i meant her crazy, insane, diva high black girl belting she does in Hairspray which she doesnt do in batboy, althought Devon, Doug Storm and the mother are AMAAAAZING. I was hoping kerry would belt better, but she had mediocre times to belt, and fully using her softer tones. She still has great voice, I just get excited when an actor gets to show off their voice to the fullest potential! re: re: prodigal... re: re: prodigal...

Last I heard they were. If you look at the bway.com photo-op from they Les Miz closing, they have a photo of them together. I believe they purchased an apartment together. Updated On: 6/7/03 at 06:27 PM
