I just watched my tape of the 1996 Tonys, and was wondering who the actress was in one of the clips who won some sort of Tony in 1991? She was very little and very cute.

Have there been other young performers to get Tonys?

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

That was Daisey Eagan, who won the featured actress in a musical Tony for The Secret Garden.

I think Frankie Michaels, who won a Tony for his performance as Young Patrick in Mame may still hold the record as youngest Tony winner...

No. I think that's Daisy Eagen. She was 11 or 12.

Yeah, Frankie is the youngest, though Daisy wasn't much older than him when she won. He was 10 and she was 11. I can't recall any other kids that have won besides those two.

The youngest winner of Best Actress/Musical is Miss Liza May Minnelli at 19 for Flora.

Magruder is right. The Internet Broadway Database notes that Frankie Michaels (winner Best Featured Actor/Musical, 1966) is the youngest PERSON to ever win a Tony Award (at age 10). Mame is his only B'way credit.

Children should not win Tonys. That's stupid. They don't know what they're doing. *sigh

If they're able to better convey a character over actors with more experience and several times their age, they sure as hell do know what they're doing.

bronxboundexpress, what makes you so sure they don't know what they're doing? They may be incredibly talented, don't judge! Well, actually, they have to be extremely talented to win a Tony so yeh.

Whatever happened to Frankie Michaels?

There's no info on ibdb besides Mame, and there's nothing besides a short stint on a soap on imdb.

It's so bizarre when these people disappear like that.

Why don't we judge people by their performances instead of their ages, bronxbound?

Andrea McArdle, who was nominated as a child, has made statements concerning the fact that she does not believe a child should win a Tony.

That's a tough call, but I think there are a few special exceptions. Daisy Eagan was special!

Excuse me, but are you the one busting your ass on that broadway stage? No. You're sitting on your ass posting messages. More power to the 10 year old who can since a lot better than me.

But would McArdle have turned down the Tony if she had won it?

I don't know if she felt that way when she was 13, KMC. I think it came with realizing how differently she approached performing as an adult than as a child.
