Kristin at the Met - Kinda dissapointing

As someone who loved her two previous NY solo concerts at John Jay College and Carnegie Hall, I was surprised that Kristin's solo concert debut at the Metropolitan Opera seemed so second-hand. Wheras before I thought Kristin played to her considerable strengths as a performer, here she inadvertantly showed her limitations. She was content to twinkle instead of dazzle.
I was very dissapointed there was no full orchestra - what was there (an eight-piece combo) was hampered by a muffled sound quality.
Act 1 was filled with songs overdone and in need of retirement: "Goin To The Dance With You", "14-G", "Taylor" and "If" (nobody, not even Kristin, has yet approached the brilliance of Dolores Gray's original). I know "Popular" is by now too sacred to be touched, but I was hoping that Kristin might have made some bolder and fresher choices for her other soubrette songs (Like Jeff Blumenkrantz' "Toll") There's a lot of great fresh, new stuff out there, Kristin...give them a listen!
That said, I was saddened she didn't include her breathtaking Kern medley, though her enchanting "What Makes Me Love Him" was an OK substitute for "Why was I Born". Sorta.
The new Lippa/Guettel/Gordon song choices were poor.
She also needs to get over losing that freakin' beauty peagent.

Posted: 1/20/07 at 2:49pmI agree about her overdoing some stuff. She really needs to retire some of those songs(and stories!). Still love her, and although there were some not-very-exciting choices in her repertoire, that doesn't make her any less of an all-time performer. I wasn't there, but most of what I've heard has been about how charming and entertaining of a performer she is. Congrats to her on her Met debut!

Posted: 1/20/07 at 2:54pmI think "the girl from" was implied in "14-G"
