Kristina Premiere in Fall 2006

Actors, Actresses, fellow musical fans,

Lend me your ears, please!!! How far ahead can one find out where a premiere will be, and how far ahead can one purchase tickets for said premiere? Benny Andersson, co-composer of the "Kristina" score, was on Swedish SVT tonight, and was talking about the premiere...I just don't want to miss out on this...

My ears are too far away (Sweden) I´m afraid, but please share the information you get! Kristina från Duvemåla is my absolute favourite musical, and if/when it comes to Broadway I will be happy to travel from Sweden just to see it once more...

I heard something about a workshop in november (and then I heard it was postponed until february?), and I know that Peter has been in NY for auditions but that´s all I know...

I adore the Kristina score, although I have no idea what they are singing about. So they will bring this show to Broadway? Not the West End? Strange...... Still, exciting news.

She is coming, I assure you. I know that Björn has talked to Expressen (a Swedish tabloid) several times very recently regarding the musical, and Benny was on SVT the other night during Allsång (a 6-week music festival in Stockholm, please correct me if I am wrong, Moi!!), standing right next to the incomparable Helen Sjöholm...the ONLY Kristina. Oh, he was saying that the process is slower than they had hoped, that it might not open until Winter 2007. Hej, Moi, just gives us more time to save up our pennies...and your kronor!!! Nice to meet a Swedish KfD fan on here.

Oh!!! Jacco... Kristina från Duvemåla is based on The Emigrants, a 4-book series by Vilhelm Moberg. It is about the lives of Kristina and Karl Oskar Nilsson and other Swedes that emigrate to Amerika (Swedish spelling) in the mid-nineteenth century. The music is fascinating. Some of the songs... Min Lust Till Dej (My Desire-Lust For You), a duet between Kristina and Karl Oskar ... Missväxt (Bad Harvest) -- the reason they emigrated ... Löss (Lice) ... Life onboard ship ... Hemma (Home) -- Kristina telling her youngest and other young Swedish Americans about a home she would never see again ... Min Astrakan (My Appletree) -- Kristina remembering her tree ... Missfall (Miscarriage) -- Kristina loses her child, Ulrika and Karl Oskar mourn ... Du Måste Finnas (You Must Exist) -- Kristina talks to God ... I Gott Bevar (In Good Keeping) -- the last song. Jacco, I do not believe in ruining good endings, so this one I will leave for you to find on your own, and you can. There are several excellent translations online. Just google Kristina fran Duvemala English translation Michael Cain. This is a non-literal translation in meter to the music, but you will get a sense of what it is about. This is by far the most touching and one of the most powerful musicals to date. Tell me what you think, Jacco...

Oh...Jacco, you seemed confused as to why it would open first on Broadway. In the past month or so, I've heard several things...opening in Minnesota, where many Swedes emigrated, then opening on Broadway, which makes sense, but by all rights, should open in Chicago, which was once called the third largest Swedish city... So, who knows? I'm guessing that someone does, they just aren't quite ready to share...yet.

Hi JWB,

you asked me to correct you, so I will: "Allsång (på Skansen)" is a liveshow that is broadcast(ed?) every tuesday during the summer. It takes place in "Skansen" in Stockholm, which is a kind of a park (don´t know the english word for it, but there´s a lot of houses, shops, e.t.c showing life the way it was in the 17-, 18- and nineteenth centuries). If you watch it on TV it lasts for an hour every tuesday evening, but those who watch it live gets there in the morning, sits there all day watching rehearsals e.t.c and finally - after the broadcast - there´s an "extra-show" which isn´t broadcast(ed?).

Helen has been there several times, and Peter as well (I think he has been there every summer the last ten years).

2007 is far away, but saving money is necessary, yes...

Too bad it´s so hard (impossible?) for foreign actors in the US. Helen IS Kristina, and Peter IS Robert...

Tack for the correction. I agree that Helen is the only Kristina, Anders is the only Karl Oskar, Peter is the only Robert, and do not forget Aså Bergh...she is the only Ulrika. What a voice she has...

I don't know a lot of Swedish...I am just learning because of my love of Kristina...we will be wed...om hennes vill ha mej (if she will have me(?). So, what words are weird in my uh, name...? Hahaha. this is getting really interesting. I'm Dutch by the way. And I can sing along to half the cast recording phonetically. I tend to scare all the people around me. Haven't tried it on a Swedish audience though...... I just love the recording, but have been a die-hard ABBA fan from the age of 6 or something. and Knowing Me Knowing You was in the charts then.....so now you know. Haven't really warmed to Mamma Mia though. Don't know why. Love the score of Chess, but never saw a succesful production in either London or the Netherlands. But I did see the wonderful dvd of the Swedish production (but couldn't understand a word AGAIN....Why didn't they subtitle that in english?

Hi Jacco!

The DVD recording of Chess from Circus in Stockholm is OK, but NOTHING compared with having seen it live! I saw it four times in Stockholm, and I could have seen it more times... Helen was great as Florence, and Anders played both the American (usually) and the Russian (as understudy) in a brilliant way. I saw him in both parts...

This might be the b est news I have heard all year! Is Helen being transported with the show? Not that i want to upset her life in Sweden or take her away but she is just incredible. I feel that no one can do the role justice besides her. I saw chess in stockholm awhile back and my breath was taken away multiple times by the magic that is that woman. Does anyone know if they cut the show down for an ADD American audience. Four hours is a bit long for a broadway show nowadays. I hope they do not for every song in that show is gorgeous

Sweedboy...love your nickname. Now, as for the incomparable, incredible Ms. Helen coming to star in Kristina, it will be tragic if she doesn't, but...the other night on SVT (Swedish TV), Benny Andersson said that they were looking for a good vocalist/lead. Ms. Helen was interviewed the day after, saying that yes, she wanted the part, but that if she got it, there would have to be many changes... one, she would have to drop her whole life in order to do it, including her gig with BAO: Benny Andersson's Orkester. If the show hits and stays for any length of time, she would be away from home for a long time... And all this is IF she could get past the American Theatre Union, Actors Equity, or whatever stupid governing body can't see that at least the four leads in this musical need to be REAL Swedes... not fakers. Forgive me if any of you out there are in this production, but if you've heard the original score with the original singers/actors/actresses and know just how powerful this is, I think even you may agree...

We know you're out there...you are probably not allowed to talk about the production at the moment, though...

No, all, I'm not insane. I believe that at least one person on this board is in the future "Kristina"... Possibly the new, improved (???) Kristina herself...?

I doubt the originals will follow the production over.......They will look for big, KNOWN names that will bring the tourists in......
This is NOT a slight against the originals, as I am half Swedish (fathers side) and would love to see them in it.

But.......it won't happen.

The only time an original Dutch musical was transferred to Broadway (I feel ashamed to mention its title, but it was Cyrano and completely AWFUL) the producer of the show Mr. Joop v.d.Ende actually managed to get the Dutch principal actor over to Broadway. Mr. Bill van Dijk (now that's a name for showbizzzzzzz) was allowed to play Cyrano and did his best for more than half a year. But the whole show was never going to make it. So there is actually a chance. But reality is that they will look for an American star. If you could just change the title of your topic to "Edina to play Kristina" you would get 700 hysterical replies!

Kristina is a fantastic musical. I was fortunate to see it twice in Minnesota back in 1996 !!!
It was the first time I actually met Benny and Bjorn and got both their autographs along with the cast.

Helen's stole my heart away with her fantastic voice especially the song "Du Maste Finnas".

Peter was fantastic too - I heard Peter is signed up to perform on Broadway.

I cant wait to hear the music in English to better understand the whole musical. I just the "sound" and feelings are still relevant with the Swedish version.

Thanks for your site. Peter played in The witches of Eastwick in the West End didn't he? I'm sure I've seen him 3 times and he was pretty good (although I never really LOVED that show...)

I think the reason Kristina's going up on Broadway first is because there's common American/Swedish history... Nearly a quarter of the Swedish population left for America. Hopefully it will come to the West End too eventually (it's a lot closer to me!!) However there are no obvious cultural or historical ties between Uk and Sweden in regards to Kristina.

I'm really sorry for my ignorance but are you talking about Cyrano the musical? Again I appologise for my ignorance but I thought it was Danish... If we are takling about the same show I saw it in Sweden and it was fantastic!!!

No, that must have been a different show. Cyrano was produced in the Netherlands 9 years ago or something, and transferred to Broadway. Writers were both called van Dijk. Was a big hit in the Netherlands, but NOT at all on Broadway. And I would have heard of a Danish production.....
