I was really upset the "Love Montage" was destroyed when they cut "I Saw Him Once" for the Broadway Transfer.
Yeah...I finally got to listen to most of the recording, and I now understand why people complain about "Master of the House" being really long originally; definitely a good cut. I also was very open to Young Cosette's added verse in "Castle on a Cloud" since that character has such a short part anyway. I really wish that Gavroche had a better sort of "translation" of "La Faute a Voltaire" than "Little People" since I never particularly miss the full song, and when he does his small bits during "Javert's Intervention" and "The Second Attack", I believe they are quite appropriate.

I remember, years ago, I saw a touring production where after Master of the House they had this little snippet of Castle on a Cloud between Valjean and Cosette where he asks her name, and she replies, "I'm called Cosette". It wasn't on any of the CD's I had. I wasn't sure if the writers had recently created that, or it was originally cut and then reinserted back into the score. The next year when the tour came back again to my town, that tiny scene was gone. I listened for every recording I could get my hands on and it wasn't there. I would ask people about it and they didn't know what I was referring to. About three years ago I looked through the score, and there it was! I was happy they included that little gem into the movie!
I think I remember reading somewhere that that scene was added when the show was heavily revamped on Broadway for the 10th anniversary. I'd just like to hear a version of the scene where Young Cosette doesn't sound so weird when she sings that line. When I saw the 25th anniversary tour in October, both girls playing Cosette sang it, "Eh'm caulled Coh-settttt."
And yes, I realize how picky I'm being. :-p
So is the movie soundtrack the only recording of that scene?
Legally, yes.
That scene was cut in the Barbican production and then added back in (somewhat differently) for the Broadway 10th anniversary in 1997. Some of the instrumental part at the beginning was shortened with the overtime cuts, but it's still in the show.
