I was pissed when I heard my all time favorite book - "Winston's Opera" - was being made into a musical. But it turned out FINE!

Posted: 12/8/05 at 5:27pmWinston's Opera is the best book ever written....the show didn't really live up to it, though. I blame the set design.

Well, I remember in an interviews, Brooks said that the book is too long to make into a musical. I'm glad he only used Volume I - with J.T.. I didn't like Volume II - where Winston gets another chance to write an Opera - and he chooses homeless people. Although, the second volume has a hilarious line. Winston comes down and sees a group of homeless people harmonizing together and he says, "Only in Brooklyn do the homeless sing and people throw money at them!"
Well, I guess it isn't funyn out of context...

Posted: 12/8/05 at 5:33pmI'm sure people originally thought that Victor Hugo's book would be destroyed as well but it seemed that that turned out okay.

Well some would argue that Jonathan Larson destroyed La Boheme...but I won't go there.
Give it a chance. It may surprise you. The creatives and cast behind it are all first rate.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 5:50pmi'm upset about this without seeing it because of it's Musical Theatre format, I agree it could take an interesting take on the source materical, but I hope and since Elton's involved they do not remove the homoerotic subtext "Interview of The Vampire" movie did due to Tom Cruise personally asked for it to be removed. But anyone have any more information about this? If its about Lestat then I can't see much more than the second book of the Vampire Chronicles "The Vampire Lestat") would be in the play. Also, lets not forget the musical to Stephen King's "Carrie"

Posted: 12/8/05 at 5:58pmI guess those that don't have a true love of the first three Vampire Chronicles will either ignore this post and have private convos or just tell me im' overracting. I give the Musical 2 months on Broadway at the most.

What about "Carrie?"

Posted: 12/8/05 at 6:04pmAre they adapting all 3 of the first novels into the musical? I wasn't aware of that.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 6:10pmAccording to the synopsis in the new program, it's pretty much just the first two novels, "Interview With The Vampire" and "The Vampire Lestat." Not much seems to be drawn from "Queen of The Damned." Which suits me just fine as I never liked the last one very much.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 6:27pmAnne Rice is supposedly very pleased with what she's seen and heard of this so far.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 6:30pmYes...but as much as I love her, Rice doesn't always have the best judgement.

Why am I not surprised at the inanity of this?
Oh yeah. Because it's ajay waxing eloquent.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 6:39pmi am a BIG Anne Rice fan, ajay, and im kind of excited for this. One thing I like already is that its called Lestat- keeping the author's intention of having Lestat be the protagonist, even through Interview. which already separates it from the movie. it should be interesting. I think elton and the book writers and so forth should be able to keep a sound balance between the original feel of the books and what is appropriate to reach a broad audience. if we have Rocky Horror Show, why cant we have this? right? Also, if youre worried about how the music is going to sound, I believe a couple of the songs are out and about. do a thread search im sure theres a link to a couple of them in here somewhere. i dunno, im hoping its good, trying to go in with a positive attitude, not expect too much and all that. it will be what it will be.

Ann Rice is not going to say she hates it, is she?
I'm sure she gets a kickback - and wouldn't be saying, "This sucks. Don't see it. I don't want royalties."
#22re: LESTAT the MUSICAL, please lock up Elton so this won't happen!
Posted: 12/8/05 at 6:50pmI think that she would say she hated it if she did, yes. She completely detatched herself from the IWTV movie after losing the battle to have someone other than Tom Cruise cast as Lestat, and then had to eat her words after seeing how wonderful he was in the movie. So I don't think that she's going to be supportive of something that she thinks is doing injustice to her work.

#24re: LESTAT the MUSICAL, please lock up Elton so this won't happen!
Posted: 12/8/05 at 6:53pmExactly. I remember her being VERY annoyed at the casting of Tom Cruise in Interview. I also remember the open letter of apology she wrote after seeing the finished movie.
