Just got around to seeing this Oscar-nominated documentary about the life and art of the late, great Al Hirschfeld. Surprised to have searched and not found previous discussions of the film here on BWW. It truly is an excellent insight into how he sees.

One of his drawings that caught my eye was one which was only displayed partially. The drawing was of the viewpoint of being on the stage staring at the audience. One could see the supporting braces of the set, a spotlight on the stage, and the orchestra conductor. Does anyone know if this is a general drawing or if it is specific to a show or conductor? I would love to try an find the image online and/or purchase a print of it.

He lived a very long and adventurous life. I can't even fathom having done everything he did, met everyone he met, and seen everything he's seen.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

re: LINE KING: The Al Hirschfeld Story

Is this the drawing?

From the Music Theatre International website:
MTI’s logo, which features a left-handed conductor, was adapted from an illustration by Al Hirschfeld that was commissioned by Music Theatre International.

To me that sounds like the drawing was commissioned by MTI?

D'oh! Now that I've re-read your post I realize that this isn't what you described.
