It's about time this classic was re-broadcast.
There is a mistake in the press release. It states that NBC broadcast the show ONCE only. Actually they showed it again in April 1973 about a month after the Oscars. But since then it has never been rerun or issued on video.
If you have the TV soundtrack album (on Columbia) you have the audio of virtually the whole show. Now you can see what Liza was like before she had "too much pills and liquor!"
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I don't think she let it all go to waist. I thnk two hip replacements, ncephalitis, age and vocal chords surgery contributed to a difficult period. But I saw her in concert last year in Atlanta and she still has IT. Sure she really can't dance anymore. And the voice is not the same. But she sells a song like no other

I have a copy of the show on VHS that was transferred from BETA. I am SO excited about seeing a very clear version of it.

It is a crime when a talented artist's demons take control and destroy the very talent that made them special.
It angers me to think of the wonderful films, shows and songs the fans aren't able to enjoy because of some personal problem that takes control.
Can you imagine if Garland had lived a healthy life, the joy her additional work would've brought.
One can argue that her demons fed her talent and I suppose to a degree that is true.
Same with Minnelli - I am a fan of her work surrounding the time of Cabaret, this TV special included, but shortly thereafter, she gave into her weakness and destroyed her artistic output.

Liza With A Z was rebroadcast during the Oscar balloting in 1973. It was a very shrewd move as the film has been released in early 1972. The Best Actress race was very tight that year with Berry Gordy throwing many dollars at a huge campaign for Diana Ross and Cicily Tyson was not exactly chopped liver.
This was a very subtle way of showcasing nominee Liza doing numbers from her Cabaret performance without ever saying "VOTE LIZA!"
Liza also did a lot of talk show rounds during the voting period.
I guess it all paid off.
