LONG DAY's JOURNEY INTO NIGHT original production photos

Wow, what a treat. Thanks as always, I don't know where you find this stuff.

These here are from the Museums of the City of New York website. Many I post are also from the NYPL digital collection.

Thanks for these photos; they really bring back memories. I was 12 at the time that the play opened and though I had seen a few non musicals on Broadway, my parents felt that I was too young to see the play at that time. I was very aware of it though.

Here are some interesting facts about it that I remember;

1. The cast performed only six times a week, Monday through Saturday with performances beginning at 7:30, an hour earlier than all plays and musicals began on Broadway at that time.

2. Robards' performance as Jamie is preserved in the film version made a few years later. It was directed by Sidney Lumet and also starred Ralph Richardson and Katherine Hepburn. I saw a cut version of the movie; as great in the final scene that Michael Shannon probably is in the current revival, Robards' performance simply sears into the brain.

3. In the movie, Edmund was played by Dean Stockwell. Ironically, he and Bradford Dillman, his stage counterpoint as Edmund, played the characters modeled on Leopold and Loeb in the movie Compulsion. Stockwell played the more passive Leopold character while Dillman was the aggressive and sociopathic Loeb character.

In the movie, Mary was played by Katharine Hepburn. Ironically, she and Florence Eldridge, her stage counterpart as Mary, played Mary Stuart and Elizabeth Tudor in the movie of Mary of Scotland (not to be confused with Helen Hayes - or, Little Glorie Upson, with Vera Charles! - in that play on stage). Hepburn played the more passive Queen of Scots while Eldridge was the aggressive and conscience-plagued Virgin Queen.
