Hey everyone! Just got back from seeing La Cage Aux Folles. Siigh. It was GREAT! Those Cagelles--AMAZING! INCREDIBLE! Not only are they UNBELIEVABLE dancers and acrobats, but they are BEAUTIFUL women! Ha! I'm jealous!
The cast was great--Daniel Davis was wonderful, especially after hurting his voice so recently. Gary Beach was, well, Gary Beach. Awesome. Sometimes I felt that he seemed to mimic Nathan Lane's performance in The Birdcage, but then he would go and make it his own again. Love that guy. Gavin... what can be said about Gavin? I have *swooned* over him since I saw him as Jimmy over 3 years ago and still I swoon. His voice is so good and I plan on watching 'Eloise at Christmastime' right after I finish writing this (yes, I own it...). Gavin, Gavin, Gavin...
I did not like the Anne. Maybe because I'm jealous she gets to kiss Gav 8 times a week, but I think she overacted and was annoying. I did not like her father either, who I also thought overacted and was annoying. Her mother I liked; she was cute! I LOVED Jacob--he was fantastically funny!
Overall, I had a great time. I do not think that the Marquis is the best theater for this show (personally, I don't think it's the best theater for *any* show--whoever thought of building it in the middle of a hotel was incredibly stupid)--it would have been AMAZING at a place like Studio 54 where you could really get the caberet kind of feel, you know?
One thing I was very upset about was some audience feedback I heard while leaving the show. At the very end, Georges and Albin kiss--like really kiss, not the little pecks they give all through the show. Anyway, I'm walking out and I hear the guy behind me being like 'That was such overkill at the end though. I mean, cmon, did they have to do that? I definitely did NOT need to see THAT.' And then his wife or somebody was like 'Well, if it were two girls kissing you wouldn't mind.' and he went 'Nope. I'd still be in my seat if that's what had happened.' and then they all laughed. I'm just like 'CMON, PEOPLE!' Haven't we had enough of this prejudiced crap? The reason they revived it when they did was to reinforce a message of tolerance to the community now that the so-called "gay-issue" is at a head in the media. Don't waste your time and energy seeing a show you KNOW is about a gay couple if you 'don't want to see that'. PLEASE!
Go see La Cage everyone! Gavin, I LOVE YOU!!!
