La Cage or DRS

A couple of weeks ago, I posted that I was going to see La Cage with school. Supposedly, there weren't enough seats so the school couldn't get tickets to that. So, we are now supposed to see DRS. I know absolutely nothing about DRS (I know John Lithgow, NLB, and SRS are in it), and was planning to do some research on it, but do you guys think La Cage or DRS is a better show? Just want to know what to look forward to. I hope we don't get the rear balcony!

Posted: 3/11/05 at 2:26pmI'm a big "La Cage" fan but I have to say that DRS is just phenomenal. It is absolutely hysterical...I saw it two days ago in the orchestra and the show had me in stitches the whole time. The cast, the score, the book, the set...it's all golden. You'll have an amazing time.

Posted: 3/11/05 at 2:34pmGo to DRS. I found the new la Cage a sad re-presentation of an old musical. the La Cage revival was so hyped up because the two main characters were suppose to kiss. Of course in the original 2 men weren't allowed to kiss in the 80's. Well if you squint really hard and don't blink you'll see them peck (and I mean Peck) way in the back corner of the stage and not even facing the audience. Besides the fact it look so forced to be put in. How pathetic. The performances aren't that great. They were good, not bad, but not great. The cagelles seemed to lack the power they need on stage and their performances feel really stale. The costumes all except one are boring boring boring, re mished mashed crap that william Ivey long always puts in his shows. He thinks if you slap a rhinestone on it you can make crap sparkle. keep dreaming. DRS is not without its problems either, but as far as story line, entertainment value, and performance, I enjoyed it a lot more than La Cage.

munkustrap178 isn't a fan of LA CAGE, but it really is a WONDERFUL production in my eyes, and pleanty of others.
EITHER WAY youll be seeing a deliciously fun show.
AT THIS POINT I'd say they will be the top Tony Winners frow NEW & REVIVAL of a musical IMHO!

No way in the WORLD will PO take the Revival Tony from LCAF. PO was such an awful production of my most favorite Sohndheim score EVER, not critcially loved (LCAF wasnt a Critical daling either, but moreso than PO) and besides its been closed for months now and come May will be a mere memory.
And yes I do agree munkustrap178, we havent seen CHARITY yet, thats why I said AT THIS POINT!

Posted: 3/11/05 at 3:41pmJW, who do you think will be nominated for a Tony for Best Actor...will Lithgow, you think? Think he has a good chance of winning. Who's the competition?

Lithgow is good, but...NORBERT LEO BUTZ all the way!!!
At this point I think all the contenders are:
Nathan Lane (The Frogs)
Tom Hewitt (Dracula)
B.D. Wong (Pacific Overatures)
Gary Beach (La Cage Aux Folles)
Daniel Davis (La Cage Aux Folles)
John Litgow (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels)
Norbert Leo Butz (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels)
Tim Curry (Spamalot)
David Hyde Pierce (Spamalot)
Hank Azaria (Spamalot)
Cheyenne Jackson (All Shook Up)
Raul Esparza (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang)
Am I missing anyone who would be elegible?
I have NO IDEA who the final 5 will be, its a hard guess, but I'm pretty sure at this point Butz will be taking it.

Nathan Lane won't be nominated.
As much as I want to see him WIN, Tom probably won't be nominated....

Posted: 3/11/05 at 3:54pmYou were comparing PACIFIC OVERTURES' reviews to LA CAGE's....if you want to compare them, PO got raves compared to the mediocre/negative reviews LA CAGE AND it's performers got.

"the mediocre/negative reviews LA CAGE AND it's performers got..."
I'm a little bummed because I wanted to see David, Gary, and Gavin. But yay to a new and interesting sounding show!

They honestly both got very mixed reviews. I could start posting quotes from both for both sides of the coin, but I can suffice it to say they were both mixed.
As far as the nominations go it really is a crapshoot at this point to predict 5, but if I were to do it right now, it would be...
JOHN LITHGOW
NORBERT LEO BUTZ
TIM CURRY or DAVID HYDE PIERCE
DANIEL DAVIS
& CHEYANNE JACKSON or RAUL ESPARZA
its just TOO HARD.
#19re: La Cage or DRS
Posted: 3/11/05 at 4:08pmI think Cheyenne, Raul, and Davis will be left out. Hopefully Beach won't make the cut either...nothin personal, I just thought he was wretched.

I liked them both but really like the book and score of La Cage more.
The Cagelle's are so incredible as are the costumes.
DRS is very funny but I was expecting much more as i adore Yazbeck.
Monty was better.
