Director David Leveaux can give audiences awe inspiring theatre (“Nine”). He can also give audiences reason to hang their head in bewilderment (“The Glass Menagerie” “The Real Thing”). Luckily for audiences attending “Cyrano de Bergerac,” in a limited engagement at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre, Mr. Leveaux gets it exactly right. In other hands, “Cyrano de Bergerac” could be a long, sluggish bore. But with the wonderful cast assembled, led by the pitch perfect Tony deserving Kevin Kline, this is one of the best things (and certainly the best revival of a play) running on Broadway right now.

Kevin Kline is so extremely winning in his role as Cyrano, the long nosed, Roxanne loving gentleman who is frightened to let his true feelings be known because of his looks. The fact is Kline has never been better – and he was brilliant in the Henry plays at Lincoln Center a few seasons back. His stage partners are impressive as well. Jennifer Garner as Roxanne and Daniel Sunjata each add to the productions heightened state of being.

If a production of classic theatre with a star that shines brighter than ever is your idea of good theatre, then don’t hesitate to buy a ticket or two for “Cyrano de Bergerac.”
