I have seen the Color Purple 4 times now and not once have I seen LaChanze's understudy perform. Coincedentally I heard a rumour yesterday that LaChanze regurlarly misses performances. Can anyone confirm this. I do know that she missed the final preview because of a terrible cold but aside from that I dont know.

I work for the show and can tell you that LaChanze has great attendance. It is a vocally, emotionally, and physically demanding role, and as a result she may occasionally miss a matinee once a week or so. Still, she performs, putting forth 110 percent, almost every night and is magical to watch. Plus, if she happens to be out, Kenita R. Miller really tears up the role-So, there's no need to fret!

I agree, I was actually a little offended when my friend told me that rumour. So far I have seen that the attendance for all actors in the show to be remarkable. Both principles and ensemble.

I saw it once and saw Kenita. I was on line to get tickets for this past saturday but it sold out 3 people ahead of me for rush
was she in?
I think the rumor was started because she (as well as Rachel York) missed a lot of performances in Dessa Rose.

I actually don't know anyone who has seen her, except for some people on the board.
Thanks for the inside info Rusty! I have tickets to a Saturday matinee in the future and was wondering if LaChanze would be performing.
I saw Hairspray tonight, but when I was at applebees afterwards, the peopl next to us saw TCP and said that Kenita was absolutely wonderful. I will be seeing it on Friday.
I've seen LaChanze twice, and saw Kenita for the first time tonight, and I agree with your Applebees folk- Kenita is great! The first scene was weird just for me since this is the first time I've been back since Renee Elise left, so Nettie and Celie were both 'new' to me, but Kenita was so incredibly great, really enjoyed her performance.
And as an fyi for anyone with Color Purple/rush questions during this spring break week: we did the rush for the 7pm show tonight. The very first people in line got in line at 8am, we got in line at about 8:45am and got the 6th and 7th tickets. The box office started selling the rush tix at 11am instead of noon, since the line was growing so long, and I'd say that anyone who joined the line after about 9:45am-ish did not get tickets.
I also know someone who works there and they said LaChanze has missed alot, which is a shame cause she is magnificent in this part and should win the TONY.
last couple of years have been hard for her and I sympathize and she has 2 young children she is raising alone.
I hope she can find solace in her amazing talent and I hope her health stays well.
Love That LaChanze
