Here's what I was told at Reebox by a group of 6 women who go the theatre very very often. Their ages, mid-20s to early 60s.
Thumbs UP: BOY FROM OZ (Hugh Jackman is terrific and it's fun)
Thumbs UP: I AM MY OWN WIFE
Thumbs DOWN: THE VOILET HOUR
Thumbs DOWN: WICKED
WORST: BOBBI BOLAND - the theatre was 1/3 filled, at intermission people left in droves, by shows end only 20 patrons in the audience.
Just passing along what I was told at the gym. I've not seen any of these shows.
Yours for a better Broaway!

Posted: 11/8/03 at 1:33pmMaybe they didn't like Wicked because of its underlying lesbian themes?

I don't know. I haven't seen it. Does it have a lesbian subtext?

Underlying lesbian themes in Wicked??? Where? Good lord. I didn't perceive that even for a moment when I saw the show...not that there's anything wrong with that...
And as a woman in that age group (alas...not at the gym all that often, and not too sure about how much of a "lady"...), I liked Wicked. I found it entertaining, and witty, and will be happy when the CD is available to play at home. I also liked The Violet Hour (I saw it the Sunday evening before Jasmine took a powder...). While I understand where some of the criticism comes from, it still made me think about issues it raised, I had no trouble following the story, and again, I was entertained.

Re: the "lesbian subtext" at WICKED.
One of my best buddies is a lesbian, and when we met for a drink after she saw it, she said "...Oh God, we'll be hearing "For Good" at dyke weddings.." She was dabbing her eyes, so it was a thumbs up.
I hope so. If so, I wanna hear Melissa E. and K. D. Lang do it. Wouldn't it be swell (those of you who like it)?
