^^^ LOL. Good point, Buddy. But I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when Laurents suggested it to Merman. (To be clear to casual readers: I know of no evidence that Laurents thought of the silent bow until years after Merman played the part.)

Someone in a Tree, I too take Fritz Holt's word as gospel. I just feel I have to acknowledge second-hand info. I can't remember why he told me about the recording, but he was no idle gossip and certainly not a bitchy one. As I recall it, he wasn't trashing Styne, just talking about the danger of composers conducting their own work.

Since then, I have had a similar experience with a piece for which I wrote the libretto.

Lansbury in "gypsy" was my first broadway show. started a lifelong addiction. how could it not!

Oh my God, when Lansbury takes the father's plaque off the wall and sings "But not Rooose" I get chills. It is a perfect moment.
