Is anybody here planning to watch the Tarrytown concert? I really wanted to watch it but I have no idea how to get there from Manhattan...

Per Wiki:

Tarrytown railway station is served by Metro North Commuter Rail service. Metro North trains go to New York City's Grand Central Terminal, and also go as far north as Poughkeepsie. Tarrytown is a major stop on the Hudson Line due to a large number of commuters crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge from Rockland County to catch express service to Manhattan.

This is great! She's terrific to do so many of these badly needed benefit concerts for those who have suffered from Ondoy.

I wish they would give us the song line-up.

Will the benefit at the Philippine Consulate in NYC be performed in English? Or will they be expecting a mainly Filipino crowd with the singing in Tagalog?

I'm assuming the songs would be from her current tour repertoire, English songs - jazz, musical and maybe one Filipino song. Go see the show. Seats are selling fast and it's for a good cause.

The Pechanga Casino & Resort "Inspired" Tour Concert was amazing! Lea Salonga was pitch perfect and delivered the best performance of a perfect mix of songs. I like how she went into character when she sang the Broadway songs.

Something's Coming
Never Been In Love Before
Two Words (her wedding vow)
Hahanapin Ko (Tagalog)
Reflection (extended version)
On My Own
A Whole New World
I Dreamed A Dream
Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal (Tagalog)
Promise Me
Gone Too Soon (Michael Jackson tribute)
Someone To Watch Over Me
Taylor, The Latte Boy
Everybody Says Don't

Note, if you plan to see her after the show...the line is HUGE! But, she was very gracious to entertain all her fans.

If you want to help, whether or not you can afford the expensive remaining tickets, here's an NYC Midtown goods dropoff point:

Until Saturday, 31 October, the Philippine Consulate General New York will receive in-kind donations for the Tyhoon disaster. Oral rehydration medicines and antibiotics are prioritized. Blankets, sheets, towels, canned goods, and toiletries are welcome. They can be delivered to:

Marievic Dimaculangan, Cultural Officer
Tel: 212-764-1330
Philippine Consulate General New York
556 Fifth Avenue (between 45th & 46th streets)
New York, NY 10036

Skip the noodles or sardines, the poor folks in evacuation centers are sick of those as that's all they've been served.

Nomdeplume's suggestions of good things to drop off:

First aid kits
Bandaids, bandages
Neosporin, bacitracin (skin infections from the flood), topical antibiotics
Cans of Spam (very popular there), canned ham, canned beef, canned soup, canned vegetables, evaporated milk (cans of food don't spoil in the hot weather and can be transported to remote areas easily)
Jars of peanut butter and jelly
Rice (preferred to noodles)
Toothpaste and toothbrushes
Soap, shampoo, toiletries

Here is their priority medical needs list which will get shipped out first:

I would also suggest that sending insect repellant is a good idea.

In lotion, cream or pump-spray but not aerosol for shipping.

The latest I have read is that the flood waters may not fully recede for three months. Malaria and Dengue fever are real and present threats in the Philippines, which will be exacerbated by the standing water as a mosquito breeding ground.

"Victims of storm “Ondoy” have instant noodles coming out of their ears but they lack soap, underwear and slippers.
...
“Please don’t donate noodles anymore,” Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral yesterday appealed to the public...

...survivors of the storm, especially those staying in evacuation centers, were badly in need of other supplies...

"...that includes soap, shampoo, sanitary napkins, toothpaste, toothbrushes, underwear, footwear, cleaning supplies and cooking utensils."

Cabral noted that these items were not usually “top-of-mind donations” that people give to disaster survivors."

Laguna de Bay is a huge freshwater lake south of the Manila area that empties into the Pasig River which runs through the center of Manila. The towns around the lake have flooded affecting an additional 600,000 or more persons besides the nearly half million relocated persons in Manila and immediate towns west of/in the Metro like Marikina and Cainta.

Try to imagine 1,000,000 persons whose homes are now not habitable, though some are clinging on to protect their valuables, living on second floors and rooftops. The latest estimate I read for Laguna is that they expect it to take five months to drain out the water. There has been all kinds of illegal building and fishponds set up that have blocked estuary outlets compounding the problem. For a poor country, with average annual per capita income of $1400, this disaster is devastating. And this was not one of the poorer areas, which would be the remote islands.

I hope this concert will also be providing relief to those affected by the second typhoon that landed on the Northern Luzon area, Typhoon Pepeng.

When the first storm, Typhoon Ondoy, hit Central Luzon and the Manila area, it was technically a tropical storm dumping a deluge of rain, but did not have hurricane force winds. The main damage was caused by intense flooding. Ondoy did become a typhoon afterward, so it is not inaccurate to call Ondoy a typhoon.

Typhoon Pepeng, on the other hand, was a super deadly typhoon category 5 that reduced to a strong typhoon category 4 just before it made landfall in eastern Northern Luzon. The Sierra Madre mountains up there were said to have helped against the typhoon as it hit against them, but it still hit with incredibly destructive winds in the 105 to 125 mph range, destroying buildings, tearing off roofs, sending huge trees flying and causing plenty of flooding. They can't even reach some of the affected areas due to impassable mountain roads so the figures for loss of life are bound to go higher.

Typhoon Pepeng crossed westward across the top of Luzon into the South China Sea, having drenched the famous mountain resort of Baguio (where boxer Manny Pacquiao, who has won five world titles in five different weight divisions, trains) with 20 inches of rain in one day. Typhoon Pepeng was prevented from hitting Vietnam, Taiwan or China by a hot air mass over China. It reduced intensity to a tropical storm but was pulled backward, hitting western North Luzon by a weather effect cause by a third typhoon, the one that went up and hit Japan. Now Tropical Storm Pepeng, which picked up plenty of water over the China Sea, has been hovering over Northern Luzon again for days causing more flooding, landslides and threatening the breach of dams. Dams have had to spill water, adding to the mess to avoid their breach which would cause greater tragedy.

And Pepeng hasn't left yet! It's still pouring rain!

There is a very good map in this article to show the affected areas on Northern Luzon by Typhoon Pepeng. It zooms in and out and you can move it around to check different areas. I'm not sure what the estimate of persons affected in Northern Luzon is, but were it one or more million it would not surprise me. Towns completely flooded, homes washed away, inaccessible regions.

And everywhere on Luzon, the precious rice crops, which were about to be harvested, have been destroyed. (Corn crops in the North were also destroyed.) The Philippines as a country is said to be the world's top rice importer. So having their own rice crops ruined is a huge agricultural devastation for them.

I hope this gives an idea of the extent of the crisis in the Philippines. It is not merely 400,000 displaced in Manila, which would be enough of a crisis. It is gigantic, encompassing Laguna, Northern Luzon, and other islands and they need help.

"At least 40 bodies have been recovered and 150 people more feared dead after a massive landslide buried dozens of houses in La Trinidad, Benguet on Thursday night while tropical depression Pepeng (international codename Parma) was pouring heavy rains over northern Luzon provinces."

That looks like a loss of life of 190 in just one town in Benguet province.

I fear the toll for the Philippines in the final accounting of this tragedy.

"At least 54 people were reportedly killed in Baguio City due to a landslide. Seven more people died in a landslide that hit Tublay municipality.

Mountain Province Governor Maximo Dulag said five people have been confirmed killed and 32 more missing in Tadian municipality.

Dr. Olive Luces of the Cordillera civil defense office said four major entry and exit points to Baguio, Benguet and Mountain Province remain impassable, cutting off much needed aid to those areas."

This heartbreaking tragedy in the northern Luzon Provinces goes on and on. Those are only individual instances and more than a million people have been affected in Northern Luzon now.

Latest NY Times article on Typhoon Parma (called Typhoon Pepeng in the Philippines).

"Typhoon Parma also damaged a number of roads and bridges, effectively isolating several provinces from Manila. The National Disaster Coordinating Council said more than 50 bridges and roads in 17 provinces had been rendered impassable as a result of flooding or landslides.

The release of water from the San Roque Dam flooded the Agno River, flooding at least 30 towns and dozens of villages downstream, officials said. The release was meant to prevent the dam from bursting."

The remote Cordillera mountain region in Northern Luzon gives plea for help:

"Because of the devastation in CAR [Cordillera Administrative Region], the CPA [Cordillera Peoples Alliance] has called for an urgent disaster response.

Together with the Center for Development Programs in the Cordillera (CDPC), the CPA organized a disaster response body composed of its network of organizations called “Serve the People Brigade-Cordillera Disaster Response Network.” ...historic because it was derived from the disaster response initiatives of Cordillera activists during the 1972 floods and July 1990 earthquake.

CPA said that Serve the People Brigades are presently coordinating with individuals, institutions and organizations in CAR for rescue and relief operations.

“The Brigade humbly and urgently appeals for all forms of support for its relief and rescue operations not only for the victims of ‘Pepeng,’ but in the coming emergency situations expected due to the impacts of climate change and the prevailing political situation.”

Appeal for help

CPA said its brigades needs the following for relief operations: food (rice, canned goods, biscuits, munggo [beans], sugar, salt, cooking oil, boiled eggs), drinking water, gas for generators, clothing, new underwear, blankets, sleeping mats, toiletries (soap), cooking pot, flashlights, batteries and tents.

It also needs medicine such as paracetamol, pain relievers, anti-worm (mebendazole), antacid, amoxicillin, cotrimoxazole, bandages, hydrogen peroxide and betadine.

As for rescue operations, it needs rubber boots, shovels, raincoats, food for work, mountaineering ropes, batteries, flashlights, lime and body bags.

It also welcomes the assistance of paramedics, doctors and volunteers as wells as individuals and companies who can lend their vehicles for rescue and relief missions."

How do we get supplies to the Cordillera? Anything shipped will get routed to Manila and their needs plus Laguna's may absorb it all. How can we help the Cordillera? Perhaps the Consulate will know.
