I've heard a Female Leading Player, but both a Male and a Female sharing the role together on stage??
I saw this happen on a clip on "that site" of "Once on This Island" for the role of Agwe where they each sang a verse and shared the chorus.
My friend just called me and told me he was cast and was sharing the role of Leading Player with a female, (not double cast) apparently they are going to alternate line/scenes maybe???
Can this work?

My school did it this past spring with three (3) Leading Players.
I worked on a production with 3 as well.
One male leading player and two female companions.

CAP21 had a guy and a girl in April. It worked very well.
When I was in High School, we performed Pippin with a Male and Female Lead Player. It worked very well, and we established some pretty gorgeous harmonies for songs such as "Glory", "Simple Joys" and "Morning Glow." They also took on different personas, which was a huge twist- the male was sarcastic and witty, while the female was more flirtatious and playful.
I was in a community theater production of Pippin, and we performed it with just a male Leading Player. So, I dunno, maybe it'd work with both? I'm not sure.
