i was being facetious.
i actually have a lot of faith in jerry mitchell to put on more than a mediocre show, i simply question the theatre choice.
and don't knock the tourist... yeah i wish they'd walk faster, but they keep shows running.

Posted: 7/17/06 at 3:06pmI kid, I think they should everything to fill the seats. I have a lot of friends at the Palace, I just hope they can score a hit with this show. It's just so huge. I think if Blonde was the only movie2musical on Bway it would be easier. It's just so confusing with Wedding Singer and stuff like that.

Posted: 7/17/06 at 4:28pmI just recently rented the movie- I know, I'm behind the times- and I wonder if anyone agrees with me: Cute movie, but odd choice for a musical? Was there enough substance there to hold a live audiences attention for 2 + hours? Not trying to be negative about a new show- I LOVE when new shows make it into the city- Just wondering if anyone else thought it was an odd choice for a musical?

I doubt she'll make it to Broadway though. She has a new sitcom starting in the fall with Tina Fey.
I think "Drowsy" sort of went beyond limits. We all thought it would fail because the theater was way too big for this show, but it was selling 100% and making millions, so I think if Legally is good, it will do fine. And it has great potential.

But wouldnt you say the appeal of the movie, help the musical. I mean LEGALLY BLONDE (the 1st movie.) was a huge sleeper summer hit and is funny in such a way that it appeals to many. If they keep the same goofy charm of the movie and dont try to hard to make a full on Reese inpirsnation, then I dont see how this couldnt make money.
Any reference to All Shook Up and closing makes me still sad to this day, I say as I am wearing my ROUSTABOUT t-shirt.

Posted: 7/18/06 at 4:35pmLegally Blonde will have the same fate as Lestat. As much as I love Jerry Mitchell's work and hope a new star can be created (as millie did for Sutton) I just dont think it will last. The theatre is too big.

Until we see the show move into the theatre and have paying audience, we cannot determine the fate.
"Legally Blonde will have the same fate as Lestat"
That statement is completely inaccurate and based on what information? Lestat flopped because the material was weak and it was staged poorly. To say that, you are assuming the show has no chance at all because the material is weak and it is staged poorly.

WEDDING SINGER, LEGALLY BLONDE and HIGH FIDELITY all have the same target audience. As long as each one closes before the next one opens they should be fine. I just don't know who is picking these projects.
What other mediocre movies of the last twenty years can we musicalize? How about ONE OF THE GUYS or A NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY?

They're in the works Michael. And don't you forgot about "Get Shorty: The Musical" and "Elf: The Musical" - both of which are horrible ideas.
I'm not sure why people are relating this to Millie/Sutton. It doesn't seem like it's going to create the same sort of star like that show did. Millie wasn't really a recognizable name - at least not for us younger folks.

"WEDDING SINGER, LEGALLY BLONDE and HIGH FIDELITY all have the same target audience. As long as each one closes before the next one opens they should be fine. I just don't know who is picking these projects. "
Why, because they were all movies?
i don't know that i'd agree with this. Wedding Singer is something of a nostalgia show. High Fidelity is cult-ish, from what I know of the movie. I think Legally Blonde fits into the Wicked demo with its up-with-girls message.
I don't understand the negativity about this show. The buzz is great among those who saw it, and the presentations were sealed up tighter than a drum.
And how does anyone know what the physical production is like or what size theatre it needs if no one's seen it?
Just my two cents.

Because they are all MEDIOCRE movies. Mediocre soure material tends to result in mediocre musicals. I don't have any real issue with musicals based on movies, only mediocre musicals based on movies.
And being kept under close wraps doesn't necessarily translate to quality...

Posted: 7/19/06 at 9:02amMichael, I'd say that HIGH FIDELITY was more than mediocre, even though it's less than great. Also, I'd think that they would perhaps aim for a slightly older audience for HF...WEDDING SINGER and LEGALLY BLONDE are definitely aiming for pre-teens and teens. Given HIGH FIDELITY's subject matter and themes, I'd expect they'd want to be bringing in twentysomethings and up.

anne3, the character of Emmett is being scrapped for the theaterical adaptation of the film. The new love interest that will go in his place was played by Christian Borle ("Spamalot") at the last workshop, but I am not sure if he plans on continuing with the show.
Also at the last workshop was Kate Shindle as Vivian, and I am pretty she will take the role to New York.
As others have said, Rachel Dratch will not be playing Paulette, nor did she ever have any intention of doing so (she was always either doing SNL or Tina Fey's "30 Rock," both of which would have prevented her from taking the part.) She merely did the work shop out of interest.

Posted: 7/27/06 at 1:01amWhy would they get rid of Emmett and then replace him with a character that was just like him?

Who said anything about the character being just like him? All I said was that the new character is also a love interest for Elle. The character of Emmett may very well end up in the final version, because he was still there in the earlier readings, but I know that ever since Christian Borle has been brought in he has been playing a new character in place of the Luke Wilson role (but still intended to serve the same function.)

No, the character of Emmett is still there, as Elle's love interest, name intact. But yeah, he's been changed a bit from the movie, where he was there as a love interest and to provide moral support for Elle. In the musical, he's more involved with Elle on a day-to-day basis, he gets backstory, and he gets a bit more of a character journey than film-Emmett did. In short, he's a little more three-dimensional.
