Hi. My secondary school is doing Les Miserables as my school production next month and I’m freaking out. I MUST be in a lead role. I really want Éponine or Fantine. Here’s the thing, the age range of my school is 11-16. I’m 14 but have a strong voice. The boy I want to sing with is 15 but has the best voice in the school and I’m pretty sure he will be cast as Valjean. If I am Éponine I have no songs with him really as the letter scene is cut for length. I suppose now I will go for Fantine but then I don’t get to be in One day more, which is my favourite song in the musical. I then thought of going for Cosette as she gets to sing with him and is in ODM. But she isn’t in it as much. I can hit her high notes easily as I am a high soprano but I can handle Fantine and Éponine just as easily . The next thing is, I can only sing a verse and a chorus or two sections of a song I’m not sure whether to do a song from the show. I know professionally you shouldn’t but as it’s school I’m not sure. The next thing is, we don’t get to go for specific roles, we just go in and sing and I can’t think of any songs that are like Fantine or Éponine that also can get me considered for Cosette. Please help me, thank you so much.

Dont sing a song from the show you are auditioning for even if it is just for school. And just have fun during your audition no matter what role you get (even if its the ensemble) you are going to have a blast. Dont stress out about having to get a lead. Your only 14 you have plenty of more shows ahead of you. Just have fun.

I would recommend choosing a song from Martin Guerre, Miss Saigon, or Pirate Queen. All three are Boublil and Schonberg scores, so they will be in a similar pop-opera style. If you go the Miss Saigon route, go with one of Ellen's songs. She isn't a well-liked character, so other teenyboppers are less likely to choose her songs.

Martin Guerre and Pirate Queen are even better options because they are flops that this generation is less likely to have heard of, so there won't be eight other girls singing the same song as you.

Thank you so much. I think I am going to go with ‘Now that I’ve seen her’ from Miss Saigon or ‘Woman’ from Pirate queen.
