Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert

No

Not enough talent yet to sell out the 02 arena, be great if they done this show in two halfs, the first with a contemporary modern cast and the second half with a great classic cast, which has to include Colm Wilkinsom for the second part.

Its at the o2 but not in the arena...there is a smaller venue, a 2400 aprox at the o2 where it will run.

There is two circulating rumors, the first being the current tour will play the Indigo (would NEVER happen, it doesn't have the right facilities AND you cant even fit half an orchestra on that stage... and thats without performers) the second being there would be a concert, similar to the tenth anniversary one in the main arena, from what I can tell, the most likely, and the most talked about is a full, all star concert in the main arena, which I believe this thread is about, which leads me back to my point, it may sell out 2000 seating touring venues, and maybe even 15 years ago it could sell out the 8000 seating Albert Hall, but I very much doubt a concert (no matter what the cast) could sell out the 23,000 seating O2, that is 15,000 seats to fill than ever before in this country!

I too think it might struggle, unless there was some major star power or something else very special going on.

Big fans of the show will go to see it done in a slightly different way in a new venue, and the tour has been breaking box office records in most of the venues it's been to, so there isn't any doubt about it being a popular show. However, I don't know how many people will want to travel to the O2 for one specific evening. Outwith the dedicated fans, people in and around London will need an extra special reason to make the trip and some of those are going to the Barbican.

However, interest in the show is bound to increase during the year as the anniversary approaches, and the tour CD is released and promoted. There might be people from around the country who heard great things about the tour, but couldn't get seats who might decide this is the even they should travel for.

If they are going to have a concert at the O2 there had better be a good reason for it, other than getting to say they held it at the O2. If they can do things on that stage or in that space they couldn't do in a conventional theatre it makes sense, but if it's just to have a bigger audience, where most are further away, it's not so clever. But if they are doing technical things with that space, it could be very expensive for a single event.

Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert

Success for the 25 anniversary concert is subjective to the names, they get in.

Being hypothetical here, if they got Cliff Richard to play Javert, Dame Vera Lyn to play Fantine and Barry Manilow to play Valjean, tickets would sell out in minutes, as these three stars fit in with the demographic of the audience of Les Miserable. I am aware the examples I use are poor, but you can see where I am coming from.

Would I go? Not a chance.

Either way, in agreement with Phantom, if this DID happen, it would not consist of musical theatre actors, as it would not sell, the only hope they would have of packing this venue out would be to get HUGE names, but unfortunately, that doesnt mean choosing the best talent, thus making the idea of this concert redundant!

My ideal cast would be contemporary for the first half, with actors such as the ones mentioned already plus actors like Lee Mead, Connie Fisher, Ramin Karimloo, Joanne Riding, Sheridan Smith, Stephanie J Block, Sutton Foster, Tim Curry etc

The second half a complete cast change to a classical line up like; Colm Wilkinson, Michael Ball, Alan Armstrong, Elaine Paige, Jonathan Pryce, Sarah Brightman, Nathan Lane, Angela Lansbury, Phillip Quast, Maria Friedman etc.

I would prefer there to be a free concert in Hyde Park, payed for by sponsors, TV rights and DVD sales, but realistically the British weather can play havoc with such a event, so therefore I would think the 02 would be best choice for that reason.

Would I go? You try keeping me away.
