My cinema had a lot of "Is it awkward to applaud? Well, let me see if I can get it started. Oh... no? Well... okay... Oh, wait -- someone else did it. Can we applaud now? There's a little bit of applause and -- Oh, what? You're done applauding? Okay... um... never mind" moments.
The big question is -- Who here still feels the DVD is an essential, already having paid $15 (or whatever) to see it?
Considering I already wanted to MST3K the thing so badly last night, yes, the DVD is essential!
We had some people who just burst out into applause after Bring Him Home. It was nice.
How many minutes into the audience applause did that take?
It was immediate.
Not much to add. I still prefer the 10th anniverary version, purely because I prefer Lea Salonga's Eponine and, yes, because Nick Jonas was so obviously outclassed by everyone on stage, whether they had a major or minor part. He tried very hard, and his acting was fine, but...yeah.
However, Alfie Boe was indeed glorious and, for him--as well as for the moving post-show section with the original cast--I would definitely suggest seeing the DVD if you didn't make the theater show.
One Day More & Bring Him Home I would understand the reaction to start clapping. But yeah, my theater was the same, awkward clapping over everything. You had the few people that clapped at EVERYTHING (not just end of songs) and then everyone else was like ummm, should we? shouldn't we?
Ramin Karimloo's Enjolras was apparently fond of bondage bracelets, but not shirt buttons. Not that I am complaining much.
I had such an odd fascination with those bracelets!
I most definitely want the DVD, even though I saw it not only last night, but was at both performances in London.
Some scattered applause in the theater I was in last night (Fairfax, Virginia). The surround sound in the theater made it difficult to know for sure if it was the audience on screen I was hearing or the people in the theater.
"It was immediate."
Nice. Respect.
Other than Nick Jonas' "stirring" rendition of Empty Songs with Empty Meanings, Bring Him Home received the loudest applause of the evening in my theater, along with Javert's Suicide.

I wish I could have gone, I should have been more presisent in trying to get someone to go with me. That is why I think the DVD is necessary.
Oh, ditto in my theater on "Javert's Suicide."
He jumped into the Seine... and all the kids cheered!
But I didn't cheer. I stood right up and started shouting, "This isn't what happened last week! Have you all got amnesia? They just cheated us! This isn't fair! HE DIDN'T GET OUT OF THE COCK-A-DOODIE CAR!"

We had a packed theater here in Utah. Someone even brought a red flag to wave around at the end. Thankfully, no one sang along, at least no one sitting near us did. There was a lot of applause after the big numbers and some snickering whenever Nick sang... I agree with what's been said already - he was so horribly miscast. Otherwise, I loved the entire cast, especially Alfie and Ramin. I would love to have the DVD.
Will there only be a DVD but no CD release for the 25th Anniversary Concert unlike what Cameron Mackintosh did with the 10th Anniversary Concert?
I'm pretty sure there won't be a cast recording. They did release a 25th anniversary cast recording already, which is a live recording of the 25th anniversary tour.
They screened this show a few weeks ago in Canada (I think it was the day after the actual performance) and I forgot what Frances Ruffelle wore. But all this talk about her outfit made me go and look it up. I found this video:

There's nothing wrong with that outfit. It's highly appropriate... for a 14 year old girl.
Found another video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ4l3UtxYpo The dress is not so bad at the top, just inappropriately short for someone of her age. Although, as I say "inappropriately short" I'm seeing all these images of Cher and Christina Aguilera in that Burlesque movie which is being advertised so heavily on this site. I'm sure both of those ladies would be quite thrilled with Frances' dress.
On my way out of the O2 with a friend, she stopped to talk with a friend who was part of the chorus. While we were talking, Ms. Ruffelle walked up to us (she knew the guy my friend was talking to). I thought she carried that dress off very well.
I'm not sure the people questioning the choice are questioning how well she pulled it off, but rather how appropriate it was for the event.
It was a silver anniversary, not Saturday night at Ku Bar.
My point was that it didn't seem inappropriate to me.
Thank you for clarifying that.
Sorry, I should have indicated that in my previous message.
For those new fans of Alfie Boe, check out this little video featuring him and Matt Lucas:
Alfie Boe Warbles a bit
I love that video. He can come sing in my kitchen any day!
Yeah, I'd love to have him singing in my kitchen...
sorry to bump this but I did a search and couldn't find the answer. PBS has been showing the 25th concert so I finally watched it and I liked the original cast came out at the end but why wasn't Patti Lupone there? Thanks
