slightly off topic... but during the bargain scene for cosette... does anyone's recording sound like thenardier's "beyond rubies is our little girl" sounds like he's blubbering the word rubies?? sounds so odd
debbie byrne isn't my favorite fantine... she sounds like she's cold and can barely sing... how was she acting wise on stage??

Yeah, the way he says "rubies" always bugged me, lol.
I never saw Debbie live, but I've seen clips of her onstage and liked what I saw. Like Elena Roger in Evita, it seems her performance is best appreciated live as her singing alone isn't very stellar, imo.

Winston, The CSR was released in late 1988. I remember that because I did the North American broadcast premiere of the whole thing on our Saturday Night Opera program in the summer of 1989. It resulted in a flood of calls and letters from listeners wondering where we got a recording of the entire show. (I ordered it from Footlight who were then stocking it as a U.K. import.) Later Sony released the set in Canada and Relatiity released it in the U.S. It was later withdrawn and replaced by a re-mastered version which may be the one you think came out in the mid-1990s.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

(Wilkinson last did the show - I believe - in a special 6-month engagement in Toronto in 1998.)
He also did the Dublin run of the UK tour. Closing night was May 15, 1999.

Anthony warlow IS Enjolras.
I would have said that earlier, but I thought we had really let this go into discussing seeing any CSR cat member perform the role "in person"... and sadly I didn't get a chance to see hyim

I was thrilled for the opportunity because he has always been my favorite Thenardier; for me he is the only recorded person who has managed to be funny and utterly scary. Unfortunately, he seriously phoned in his performance the night I saw him. I was very disappointed and rather underwhelmed.
