Les Miserables ending question (spoilers)#1

Posted: 7/5/11 at 9:33pm

I've been confused over the timeline of the last few scenes in Les Miserables and was wondering if anyone had a better grasp of the musical than I do.

I'm assuming that Marius singing Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, then Cosette coming on for the reprise of A Heart Full of Love takes place fairly soon after Marius and Valjean return from battle. However, at the end of that scene, when Valjean explains his past, he tells Marius that he has to leave. Then it cuts to the wedding and Cosette going to Valjean right before he dies. My question is, has a lot of time passed between then and the previous scene? Or did they just get married really fast and Valjean died before he could leave?

Les Miz is over 25 years old. Spoiler alert, really?!

As for your actual question... it's not explained. In the book, Valjean dies several months after their wedding. But I believe in the musical Valjean plans to leave Marius and Cosette just before the wedding.

I just spent $300.00 for my tickets tomorrow night...

Now, everything is just ruined...

I think giving a spoiler alert was still nice. So many on this board are so young they've never seen Les Miserables before & it ought to be new to them when they do see it.

As for the question itself, it is clearer when the direction is better. Marius is weak & being taken care of & then he's walking around while talking to Valjean. That is supposed to suggest to the audience that as much time has passed as it takes for someone who's been shot to recover.

But, please get the book when you get a chance. It really is wonderful! Just be prepared to dislike Marius & Eponine because they were both sort of unpleasant in the book.
