I think giving a spoiler alert was still nice. So many on this board are so young they've never seen Les Miserables before & it ought to be new to them when they do see it.
As for the question itself, it is clearer when the direction is better. Marius is weak & being taken care of & then he's walking around while talking to Valjean. That is supposed to suggest to the audience that as much time has passed as it takes for someone who's been shot to recover.
But, please get the book when you get a chance. It really is wonderful! Just be prepared to dislike Marius & Eponine because they were both sort of unpleasant in the book.
