I know this is going to sound stupid but can anyone simply tell me what Les Miz is about. I've heard it's an amzing show but don't know what it is about.

I'm assuming you're serious, so I'll be serious too.
Total brat Cosette just loves Marius sooooooo much, she'll do anything to be with him. She needs no real motivation, except for the fact that she LOVES him!
Eponine loves Marius too, and will pretend to be a boy just because she LOOOOOOOOOVES him.
Marius loves Cosette, and starts a revolution to prove his LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE.
Jean Valjean raises Cosette as his own daughter, because he LOOOOVED Fantine and LOOOOVES Cosette (almost in a sickening way), and he wants to her to be happy, but he has a SECRET! And if she has "relations" (I watched The Nutty Professor last night) with Marius, they all might get in trouble, because no good Javert (silent T) is on Valjean's tail.
It's romanticsm as it's worst. I hate how shows use "love" as a reason for everything.
And I also hate how people refer to it as Les Miz, since Les Miserables is so hard to spell.

I suggest you reading the unabridged version of Les Miserables, then.
rent this movie, and it'll give you a pretty good idea.

Please don't rent a movie to see Les Miz. Here is what Les Miz is really about:
Jean Valjean is a convict released on parole after serving 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. His parole officer is Javert. We see Valjean shunned from society--he can't find work or a place to stay until a friendly bishop takes him in to give him food and a bed. Valjean, still embittered by previous discrimination, repays the bishop by stealing his silver cups. When Valjean is caught, the bishop lies and says he gave the goblets to Valjean, and additionally he gives Valjean silver candlesticks. Valjean is so touched that he vows to give up the criminal life and he commits his final criminal act--tearing up his parole ticket. Years later he is a wealthy businessman and a mayor where Javert is also working as an officer. To cut this short now, he meets a destitute woman named Fantine, who is dying from TB, and promises to care for her young child, Cosette. Skip to Paris 10 years later, Cosette falls in love with a revolutionary, Marius, and we see a mini-revolution led by students. This happened after the French Revolution. There is more to it, but the story involves many sub-plots and I wouldn't want to spoil all of it for you. But if you want the COMPLETE story, go to wikipedia.
Hope that helps! Listen to the OBC or the Complete Symphonic Recording (forgive the Valjean on the CSR--he's horrible).
It's amazing. It is a show with something for everyone.

It is such a beautiful show. And what in the world don't we do for love besides for hatred?
