I like Assassins and have seen three productions, including Broadway, and I just don't feel like seeing it again. I think it's a brilliant concept with a solid score, but I find it a bit...tedious. Removing Something Just Broke would be the first step in the right direction for any post-Broadway production. It completely crippled the structure, pacing and perspective of the show that made an unsettling piece of theatre nearly intolerable.
I have never enjoyed any version of Wise Guys/Gold/Bounce/Road Show. It sits just above The Frogs in the Sondheim canon for me. The only character I cared anything about was the boyfriend as he seemed the least offensive. The score was mostly forgettable and only had one or two numbers worth remembering.
but why does everyone poo-poo ANYONE CAN WHISTLE?.
I don't really know as the book may be bizarre, but it is never boring. And the score is divine. It's a shame that the Ravinia production didn't get any traction as it was a knockout that received strong reviews. Patti, Audra and Michael were all fantastic. It was my favorite of the Ravinia Sondheim events that I saw.
