Posted: 8/31/12 at 6:54pmThere was a more recent thread about this here, where I was reprimanded for saying this--but it sounds like Alice leaving the role was largely just a victim of circumstances when they decided to scrap nearly everything (I think Hunter was the main thing that stayed). From the press I've read, she got great reviews in Florida, even if the show got mixed ones. There was other drama--

I think Kerry is affecting here; the beauty of her voice is hard to deny. On the other hand, the accent is half baked and she sounds a bit mentally challenged.

You can argue abou Zaks making it too "Disneyfied", which has some truth, and how great that ending was in its hugeness, but really I just don't think the show plays as well in a big theatre. I recently saw a very good regional production in a 900 seat house, where they insisted on closing the balcony--and it played like the gem that it is. Ashman fought hard not to have it transfer to Broadway, and I think he was smart to.
