As for the creative decisions behind the CD, I'd imagine that that was part of the illustrative requirements.

I think a lot of shows need to be seen to appreciate the score, as strange as that sounds. I hated "I Can Hear the Bells" from Hairspray on the CD, but I fell in love with it after seeing it performed.
