It infuriates me that people seem to think that only American directors should direct American plays. That's obscene and ignorant. Like Liz Smith is in any place to comment on that...

Sheila. I never mentioned Liz Smith because regardless of the veracity of Smith's column, how can someone say so and so is a nice guy and leave it at that. And on top of that, insult the stage crew by calling them disinterested and distracting.

Plum, where is the potential other side. He stated as fact that Reilly is a nice guy and the stage crew are merely taking up space.

I love intelligent responses.
If only you could be as funny as you are nasty. That would be a nice little trick.

What was the last item Liz Smith retracted? I don't remember any--and I've been reading her since before most of you were born.

And Sueleen--I'm also sick of this vogue for British directors "rethinking" American classics. I love some British directors, sometimes, but that Roundabout Follies really got on my tits. It was relentlessly misunderstood, from the ghosts to the relationships, and NY won't get another Follies, probably in my lifetime. And that was just one in a long list of British directors of American plays and musicals and European directors at American opera houses recycling what was "au courant" 20 years ago.

I'm not saying British and European directors shouldn't work in NY--I'm just saying that maybe they ought to have to pass a test or something--y'know, like a CAB DRIVER.

Paljoey:

Barrington Stage Company is producing Follies with Karen Ziemba and Donna McKechnie. In Sheffield, Massachusetts.

Gosh people,
I am gone for 2 hours and the madnes begins. I met John at the Gladd awards two maybe three years ago here in Los Angeles. A very nice man. He is also extremely well regarded for and respected in the industry.

Chita;
We could have discussion without getting bitchy and disagreeable.

Pal,
In the Los Angeles version of Liz Smiths gossip section they constantly print retractions.Mostly within the colum itself.

And I love british directors. talent is talent. What a stupid thing to say.

I know Dame. And I'm sure he was lovely at that event. All I'm saying is you don't know if he's nice. Those are two different things. But thanks for at least clearing up my doubts on where and how you formed your opinion on his demeanor.

We can't have a disagreement without being disagreeable. Sorry, that was just me getting bitchy again.

Hey by the way; Donna was the only good thing of the Follies production out here in Los Angeles. And I love Karen Ziemba.

Chita, you are ALWAYS bitchy. You pick fights with the most random people over the absolute stupidest things, my liking of Christina Applegate on of them. For some reason, you insist that my like of Applegate is "BS," as your put it via PM, and you seem to think I'm lying about liking her so much.

You seem to have some issues - whenever you post on here, you are bitchy and attack people for their opinions. Give it a rest, you are a tired mess.

Pal,
I wasn't calling you stupid. I was calling stupid the notion that Liz Smith set forth with her article. re: Liz Smith on John C. Reilly

Crosby steps into 'Follies'
Performer will replace Ziemba at Barrington Stage Co.

By FRANK RIZZO
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Kim Crosby, who played Cinderella in the original production of Broadway's "Into the Woods," has replaced Tony Award-winner Karen Ziemba as Sally in Stephen Sondheim's "Follies" at Barrington Stage Company in Sheffield, Mass., June 23 to July 16..

Well I'm disappointed! Karen Ziemba was one of the reasons I was looking forward to this.

Oh well. I'm determined to see a professional production of Follies! I had tickets for the Roundabout and it closed before I could make it.
