Saw this last night. Sat front row ctr. & was mezmerized! Horton Foote was there, as he is every night.
I'd forgotten that I'd seen Lois Smith in BURIED CHILD (another play that blew me away) & kept thinking to myself, "where has this actress been?" This morning I ckd her out on the ibdb & imdb & I'm flabbergasted by the greats that she's worked with fr James Dean, Shirley Booth, Shelley Winters:
"Is a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago.
Is an ordained minister and officiated at the wedding of actor Tim Hopper and his wife.
Once taught acting at Juilliard.
Studied acting with Lee Strasberg at the Actors' Studio.
Earned Tony nominations for her supporting performances in the plays "The Grapes of Wrath" (1990) and Sam Shepard's "Buried Child" (1996)."
Her tv work includes: the 1960 tv special "Strindberg on Love", she played Miss Julie; in the early 60's it seems she was in every tv show from Route 66, Dr. Kildare, The Eleventh Hour to The Defenders; & just about all the soaps; Her films include: Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night (Shirley Booth & Melvyn Douglas); The Way We Live Now; Up The Sandbox; Fried Green Tomatoes; Next Stop, Greenwich Village; East of Eden
This gal is a tremendous talent. Get BOUNTIFUL on Broadway & give this woman her TONY!

Posted: 2/9/06 at 12:22pmI agree. She's one of our truly great actors (not sure why she never became a household name) and it would be great if she could make it to Broadway and get the Tony for this mesmerizing performance.

Posted: 2/9/06 at 2:52pmI love Trip to Bountiful, but I've never got to see it. Where is it playing? (Besides NYC, I mean the theatre.)

It's a Signature Theatre Company production playing at the Peter Norton Space.

I just saw this yesterday and agree completely. Lois Smith is a tremendous talent and her performance was achingly beautiful. I also didn't know about her extensive credits until I read the cast notes. I even own some of the movies she has been in. And I didn't make the connections!
Actually, the entire cast is tremendous and I've just become fans of them all. I was so moved that after the show I left my playbill behind because I wasn't paying attention. I was too busy thinking about the production. (I went back later and nabbed one). Bountiful is not only a poignant look at the passing of time and the problems of trying going back...but for me,the relationships and frustrations resonanted strongly with me. I keep replaying several of the lines in my head.
I wish it would extend even longer. There are only a few shows I feel compelled to see more than once. This is one of them.

Posted: 2/20/06 at 10:08pmI heard the actress who played the young woman at the bus station commenting to friends at the stage door a week or two ago that since continued extension at the subscription-based Signature is near impossible, the producers are considering a London transfer of the show. This was a day or two before Chita announced closing though, so you still never know.
