Looking for a musical to direct at NYU

Hey everybody, I have a friend who is looking to direct a musical next fall in an intimate space at NYU. He's looking to do a student-produced production in one of NYU's larger black box theaters. If anyone can offer up any suggestions for shows, thatd be swell. Thanks.

Actually, I am looking for the same thing! I'm seeking proposals for a non-Equity storefront theatre. Small space, small cast. A musical that is not produced that often.

Although not technically a musical, I am highly drawn to Sam Shepard's "Tooth of Crime."

But I would also welcome any other suggestions.

Your friend might also check out "110 in the Shade."

Even with reduced forces, 110 IN THE SHADE still requires a chorus. A better Jones and Schmidt choice would be PHILEMON, which has a cast of six and is a terrific piece of ritual theatre. It would be a beautiful fit for NYU's black box.

Have you considered a new (or at least relatively new) show? My musical THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI, based on the silent German expressionist film, has a fairly small cast, and the designers could have a field day. It played for a couple of weeks in NYC in July-August 2001, but it's time for another production or two or three or more, I think. If you'd like, I can send you a PDF of the script.

Songs for a New World, Tick Tick Boom, John and Jen, the Last Five Years, the Fantasticks, You're A Good Man Charlie Brown.

The Thing ABout Men, Last 5 Years, The Mystery of Edwin Drood would be good for a back box because of audience interaction and they vote on who the murderer is in the show, it's great! Children of Eden and Merrily We Roll Along would be ideal as well.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Children of Eden - the chorus of that show is both enormous and necessary. If these musicals are going to be presented in one of the blackboxes in the Tisch Building (The Loewe, The Shop Theatre, etc) there's no way that could work. They did do "Seussical" in the Shop Theatre a few years ago and I'm still not quite sure how that worked. Shows like "Falsettos" have worked in the Loewe before however.

That's true about Children of Eden but it could still be down, depending on the size of the black box. I go to a school with 60 theatre students and we only have a black box to work with and we do huge musicals in there, in spite of our lack of resources and no proscenium space. It just depends on the circumstances. Right now we are doing Honk! (which would be a good show to do in a black box btw) and it's tough but we do the best we can with what we have.

tick, tick...BOOM! is fun, but would that be too small? it is, after all, only a cast of 3!!

snoopy, the musical! has a cast of 7. not the best musical in the world...but cute in its own way. "edgar allen poe" is such an awesome song!!

I saw THE LIFE done in an intimate space-- AMAZING.
And if she'll say, "My darling, I'm yours!" I'll throw away my striped tie and my best pressed tweed, all I really need is the girl...
