Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

According to Dreamguy over at imdb, Henry Krieger was interviewed on Sirius and this is what he said:

Here is what Krieger said in his interview.

"Filming ends April 7"
"All the girls are Dolls"
"Heavy is in!"
"The fight scene before AITYING is not going to be sung"
"I wrote 4 new songs for the movie... one for Effie, one for Deena, one for Jimmy and Lorell, and one new 'jackson 5' style song."
"One Night Only is absolutly in the movie"
"Aint no party is gone. It is the only song from the original not in the movie"

That kinda sucks. I really like that number. Still I am sure Bill Condon knows what he is doing and will wait and see the finished product rather than get hung up on one song.

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

I think it sucks too. Anika deserves to have at least one solo in the flick. And now Deena has one? She already sings the majority of the score. SMH.

That is a shame! Aint no party is such a great song! I love it. I also am going to miss the fight scene being sung.

I STILL CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE.... I am so thrilled! Even more so then Phantom, Rent, and Chicago all put together

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

Wait a minute!!!

"I turn my back and find myself out of the line"

"That's a lie, that's a lie..."

All of this is NOT going to be sung? What a loss.

I won't miss "Party" a bit. Never much liked the song and liked it even less after Heather Headley's version on the Actors' fund benefit recording.

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

I figured "It's All Over" would be gone, although it is a fascinating sequence it is very theatrical and probably wouldn't work on film. I'm slightly disappointed Anika Noni Rose won't have a solo but I'm sure Condon is making the best choices he can for the film.

I'm going to miss "It's All Over", too.

A THOUSAND YEARS!!!!

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie. I'm quite sad about It's All Over not being in it.
I'm eager to hear anyone sing that! I hope they record it though.

Anika also might have had problems singing the song. It truly is a bitch, and I was never sure if she had the agility to sing it.

But it may have been because the song is about Lorrell, and the movie isn't really about her, unfortunately, so I wouldn't be surprised if they took it out to keep focus towards the Effie / Deena major plot points.

If Beyonce goes crazy riffing and belting on any note, I will hunt Condon and Knowles down, and take them out.

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

Exactly what I was expecting...

Make Lorell's role tiny, make Effie's role into supporting and turn Deena's role into a leading part just because Beyonce is the most famous of all of the actresses playing the Dreams. I had a feeling they would do this, and now it's pretty obvious they are.
There's a lot I am not certain of...

I liked the sung fight before "And I am Telling You...", but I do realize why it has to be cut. I have total faith in the success of this movie.

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

If this is factual, I'm wondering what the definition of "song" is here. To say "the fight scene before AITYING is not going to be sung" indicates a song cut right there, so with the omission of "Ain't No Party" that makes at least two that are mentioned right there.

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

Wow, they cut my two favorite parts of the show. I absolutely love the way the fight is sung. Specifically for the parts that have been pointed it out and:

"Now you listen to me Miss Blame-it on the world"

Especially the repetition of "And I am telling you I'm not going" and "It's all over!" before the big dramatic pause then "And I Am Telling You..." begins...chilling!

Plus, I just love, love "Ain't No Party." So sassy and forceful, especially the divine Ms. Devine's singing of the line "That even though my man throws confetti in my face, it STILL don't make it no party"

Oh well...it's not like I have the power to change that. I really hope this film is the cinematic experience it lends itself so much to be.

OMG Heavy is IN.

I've never seen the show before but thats my favorite song (i love the concert recording)

oh and thats sad about Ain't no party and the fight before AIATYING not being sung. I love both of those.
when ducks grow thumbs then maybe my opinion will change.

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

To say Lorrell loses her solo might be misleading. On stage "Ain't No Party" is predominantly Lorrell's song, but Jimmy's in it is well. Perhaps the balance is the same with "Patience."

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

From what I now hear, Dreamworks is planning to campaign Beyonce for Best Actress and Jennifer Hudson for Best Supporting Actress.

This ain't right. Effie is NOT a supporting character. She is just as much a lead as Deena.

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

I know it may sound weird, but It's All Over is my favorite "song". After watching the 82' Tonys of it on Ytube, I find that whole sequence and the build up to be partially crucial to add to the mounting drama that is to take place in the showstopper, AIATY. I'm kind of sad now re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

It seems as though "It's All Over" is not considered a song. I'm wondering when the line "only one song has been cut" keeps being repeated if it really means "only one song from the original cast album has been cut."

Eh, I'm still excited for the movie. I'm just starting to get the same weird feeling I started to get before Rent opened.

Every time a movie musical comes out the old hackneyed bs about how "audiences won't accept people bursting into song" and that there "has to be a reason for the singing" appears. It's just odd to me that the powers that be think that cutting recitative somehow makes the raison d'etre for singing to be more acceptable. One would think that recitative would ease a viewer in the more full blown songs, thereby giving them the "justification" that seems so damn important.

There'll be like three or four songs in this thing total by the time it gets released and they'll all be peformance or "being recorded in the studio" songs.

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

Perhaps Condon is a student of the Columbus School of Movie Musical Direction - Why get the point across with two minutes of music when you can see stretch it out into four interminably boring and (and music free!) scenes?

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

I believe recitative is rather theatrical and less cinematic. I imagined "It's All Over" wouldn't be included, although I agree it is so climatic and it adds so much to the impact of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." I didn't trust Colombus but I do trust Condon because he has quite a good reputation so I'm sure he knows what he is doing. I am pretty sure Deena is going to be pushed as the leading actress just because Beyonce probably won't like to have competition from a novice like Hudson which is unfair, but we shouldn't judge until we see the final work.

re: Lorrell loses her solo in DG movie

No matter what Dreamworks executives say, this is Effie's show.
Deena hardly ever sings in the show, and the point is actually, that Effie is more dynamic, vocally and personality wise, but that Deena is the face of a more commercial crowd.

Effie has the most compelling story, and if they shift the primary focus to Deena, then who the hell will care about AIATY, or even more, I am Changing? They'll just be there as really good songs, but they'll miss the emotional build, therefore less pay off.

Unless they keep it as is, and they just want Beyonce to be considered a lead, and not Hudson, which is absurdly rediculous.

I kind of figured this would happen with Beyonce in the picture though, which is why I had major doubts about casting.

That's the show-biz.
